What it is
driveDAT is a saturation and degradation plugin from The Tone Foundry that models the sound of a Digital Audio Tape recorder pushed past its limits. It runs signal through four stages - noise floor, preamp, converter, and output - recreating the input limiting, converter clipping, and emphasis-curve behavior of vintage DAT machines. The result is a dense, compressed tone with controlled high-end clipping and bit-reduction grit rather than fizzy distortion, closer to the specific sound of overdriven mastering decks than a generic tape emulation.
Who it's for
Drum and bass, jungle, hip-hop, and dance producers looking to add vintage density and grit to drums, basslines, or full mixes, especially anyone chasing that mid-90s DAT-mastered sound.
Key features
- Four processing stages (noise floor, preamp, converter, output) with a Sub Preserve mode that crushes the midrange and treble while keeping low end clean
- Real 50/15 microsecond emphasis curve modeling recreates authentic DAT machine coloration
- 100 presets across 10 banks covering tape, vinyl, radio, drums, bass, vocals, jungle, synth, master, and destroy styles
- Advanced controls include Zero Glitch, a portable deck limiter mode, and transient shaping, with up to 4x oversampling in VST3/AU format
