What it is
Modus is a physical modeling synthesizer from Physical Audio that simulates the acoustic physics of interconnected strings, bars, and plates. Unlike sample-based or subtractive synths, it generates sound through mathematical models of real physical objects, producing genuinely organic, resonant timbres that evolve naturally with each note. It supports VST3, AU, and AAX, and is fully MPE-compatible.
Who it's for
Sound designers and producers working in cinematic, ambient, or experimental music who want textures with real physical character - struck metal, resonant plates, plucked strings - that behave more like acoustic instruments than synthetic patches.
Key features
- Six string combinations and two plate combinations provide a range of physical starting points, from shimmering bowed-string tones to percussive metallic strikes
- Spring and Rattle connection maps control how simulated components interact with each other, unlocking timbres that sit somewhere between the familiar and the novel
- Built-in processing includes a Moog-modeled VCF with drive, stereo delay, reverb, and EQ - enough to shape sounds without a separate effects chain
- MPE support enables per-note pitch bend, pressure, and slide for deeply expressive performance on compatible controllers
