What it is
Octaves is a passive bandpass filter plugin by AudioThing, created in collaboration with Berlin-based composer Hainbach. Modeled on the vintage Bruel and Kjaer 1613 octave bandpass analyzer - a heavyweight broadcast and research tool - it splits the audio spectrum into octave-wide bands for unique tonal shaping. The plugin captures the warmth and character of massive analog metal coils while adding modern controls like soft saturation, oversampling up to 16x, and an impedance knob that functions as a resonance control.
Who it's for
Sound designers, experimental producers, and mixing engineers who want a distinctive character filter for sculpting drones, textures, and spatial tones. It's especially well-suited to producers working with noise, distorted guitar, synth pads, or any dense source material that benefits from focused spectral shaping.
Key features
- Passive bandpass filter modeled on the vintage Bruel and Kjaer 1613 analyzer with authentic analog character
- Impedance control acts as resonance - keep it at zero for natural filtering or open it up for resonant, pinging tones
- Oversampling up to 16x helps avoid aliasing artifacts at standard sample rates
- Hackable back panel gives access to hidden dials that turn each octave band into an independent volume control, transforming the plugin into a full filter bank
