TikTok is ramping up its efforts to acquire and manage music content, even as it faces the possibility of a U.S. ban.

TikTok, the ByteDance-owned platform that has become a launchpad for viral music careers, is forming a new in-house Music Content Investment Team.

This team will focus on global partnerships and acquisition opportunities in the music content space, marking a significant step in TikTok’s evolution from a social media app to a major player in the music industry.

Expanding Music Content Investment

Two years ago, TikTok began hiring Artists & Repertoire (A&R) executives with record label experience and launched its SoundOn music distribution service. Now, the company is taking its music ambitions to the next level by creating a dedicated team to acquire and manage music content.

The Music Content Investment Team will be based in Los Angeles, New York, and San Jose, and will focus on acquiring copyrights and music companies.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The new team will include positions such as Music Content Investment Manager, Music Content Investment Lead, and Music Copyright Product Manager.

These roles will involve evaluating market opportunities, executing partnership or acquisition projects, and performing detailed financial analysis and valuations of music content and related assets. The goal is to shape the future of TikTok’s music business by retaining more control over the music of viral artists developed through the platform.

Strategic Evolution

This strategy aligns with TikTok’s SoundOn service, which distributes independent artists on TikTok and other platforms. By acquiring music copyrights or long-term licenses, TikTok aims to manage artists’ careers in-house rather than handing them off to record labels and streaming services like Spotify.

This move could set a precedent for other social media platforms, although competitors like Meta’s Instagram and Google’s YouTube have more experience in the social media space.

Potential U.S. Ban

Despite its ambitious plans, TikTok faces the looming threat of a U.S. ban. The Biden administration has given ByteDance until January 19 to sell TikTok’s American operations or risk a nationwide ban due to national security concerns. However, TikTok’s continued expansion in the U.S. suggests that the company is not overly concerned about this potential ban.

Why This Matters

For music producers, TikTok’s move into music content acquisition and management could have significant implications.

By retaining more control over the music of viral artists, TikTok could offer new opportunities for music producers to collaborate with emerging talents directly on the platform.

Additionally, TikTok’s focus on acquiring music copyrights and companies could lead to more competitive deals and better promotion for artists’ work. This shift could also influence other platforms to adopt similar strategies, potentially reshaping the music industry’s landscape.
