What it is
The UADx Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection includes three separately modeled versions of the classic optical tube compressor: the Silver (late-1960s), the Gray (mid-1960s), and the LA-2. Each model has distinct compression character rooted in the differences between individual hardware units from that era. The opto-electrical attenuator circuit is what gives the LA-2A its characteristic slow, frequency-dependent compression - it responds differently to different frequencies, which is why it works so naturally on vocals and acoustic sources.
Who it''s for
Recording and mixing engineers who track and mix vocals, bass, and acoustic guitars. The LA-2A''s gain reduction behavior is forgiving in a way that fast-attack compressors are not - it catches transients without sounding pumped, which is why it has stayed a studio standard for over 60 years.
Key features
- Three distinct hardware models - Silver, Gray, and LA-2 - each with its own compression character and speed
- Authentic optical attenuator emulation with frequency-dependent behavior, not a simplified VCA model
- Full automation support for gain riding on long sessions
- Artist presets from engineers including Ross Hogarth and Vance Powell
