2RuleSynth
Key Features
- Dual independent oscillators with sine, saw, triangle, square, and white noise waveforms, each with its own filter, ADSR envelope, and LFO
- Three simultaneous modulation algorithms: ring modulation (Osc1 x Osc2), FM synthesis (Osc1 modulates Osc2), and waveshape distortion
- Moog-style self-resonant filters with low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass modes per oscillator
- Modular effect network (V3) for custom signal routing through distortion, pitch shifter, comb filter, chorus, reverb, and tempo-synced delay
- 6 syncable LFOs controlling amplitude, filter cutoff, and pitch across both oscillators
- 8-voice polyphony with mono/poly switching, plus a built-in spectrum analyzer and waveform display
- 49 experimental factory presets with a randomize button for instant sound exploration
Description
2RuleSynth is a hybrid synthesizer developed by Tugrul Akyuz that combines subtractive, FM, and ring modulation synthesis within a single interface. Built with the JUCE framework, it packs an unusually deep feature set into a compact 2.7 MB download.
The architecture revolves around two fully independent oscillators, each with its own Moog-style self-resonant filter (low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass modes), ADSR envelope, and syncable LFO. You can activate ring modulation, FM synthesis, and waveshape distortion between the oscillators simultaneously, opening up timbres that most single-engine synths simply cannot reach.
Version 3 introduced a modular effect network where you drag connections between nodes to build custom signal chains through distortion, pitch shifting, comb filtering, chorus, reverb, and tempo-synced delay. The 49 factory presets lean toward the experimental side, and a randomize button scrambles all parameters for rapid sound exploration.
With 8-voice polyphony, a built-in spectrum analyzer, and waveform display, 2RuleSynth gives producers a surprisingly capable sound design playground. It runs well on older hardware while still delivering the kind of unpredictable, characterful tones that more polished commercial synths often smooth away.

Frequently Asked Questions
What plugin formats does 2RuleSynth support?
2RuleSynth V3 is available as a VST3 plugin on Windows and as both VST3 and Audio Unit (AU) on macOS. There is no AAX version, so Pro Tools users would need a wrapper.
How does the modular effect network work in V3?
You double-click on a node in the effects panel and drag an arrow to the next node, building a custom signal chain. Effects include distortion, pitch shifter, comb filter, chorus, reverb, and delay, and each effect syncs with your DAW tempo.
Can 2RuleSynth produce conventional sounds or is it only experimental?
While the 49 factory presets lean experimental, the underlying architecture is a straightforward dual-oscillator subtractive synth. By keeping modulation amounts low and sticking to the analog waveforms with the built-in chorus and reverb, you can produce classic pads, basses, and leads.
Does 2RuleSynth use much CPU?
The plugin is built with the JUCE framework and optimized to run smoothly on older computers. At 2.7 MB it is extremely lightweight, and users report stable performance across a range of systems.
