Key Features

  • Splits the signal before saturation so the selected sub range remains clean while the upper band takes the drive.
  • Focus control moves the crossover from 50 to 300 Hz, letting producers decide how much of an 808 receives harmonics.
  • Tanh, Diode, and Fold shaper modes cover smoother saturation, asymmetric heat, and more aggressive folding-style edge.
  • Parallel Mix control is latency compensated for blending harmonics back under the untouched signal.
  • Runs the shaper at 4x oversampling and reports zero samples of latency to the host.
  • Provides post-shaper Output gain plus a true-peak warning indicator for level-aware A/B decisions.

Description

808 Soft Clip is a Windows VST3 clipper built specifically for 808s and other low-end material. It splits the input at an adjustable 50–300 Hz crossover, leaves the band below that point clean, and drives only the upper band before the signal is summed back together.

Drive sets how hard the upper band hits the shaper, while Focus chooses how much of the bass note stays protected. Tanh, Diode, and Fold modes offer progressively different clipping characters, and the latency-compensated Mix control makes parallel blending practical when an 808 needs extra harmonics without giving up its weight.

The plugin uses 4x oversampling around the shaper and reports zero samples of latency to the host. Output gain and a true-peak warning lamp help with level matching after adding saturation, rather than letting a louder setting win every comparison.

808 Soft Clip is deliberately narrow in scope: it is a five-control processor with no presets, MIDI, modulation, sidechain, or macOS version at launch. The official page lists a Windows 64-bit VST3 installer, no account or activation requirement, and a permanent full-featured download.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes 808 Soft Clip different from a normal saturator?

It divides the incoming signal at the Focus crossover and drives only the band above it. That approach is intended to add grit and audibility to an 808 while retaining the lower band rather than saturating the entire signal.

Which clipping mode should I start with?

The developer describes Tanh as the gentler mode, Diode as asymmetric and hotter, and Fold as the most aggressive. Start with Tanh for a smoother result, then compare the other modes at matched output level.

Does 808 Soft Clip add latency?

The official specification says it reports zero samples of latency to the host. Its 4x processing around the shaper and the dry side of the Mix control are internally compensated.

Can I use 808 Soft Clip on macOS?

Not at launch. Donkerwerk currently provides a Windows 64-bit VST3 build and says macOS VST3 and AU versions are in progress without a stated release date.
