Description

basic 65 is a monophonic synthesizer inspired by the Commodore 64 and its legendary MOS 6581 SID sound chip. Originally a paid plugin ($24), it was redesigned from scratch as the successor to basic 64 and later released as freeware by de la Mancha.

Three oscillators deliver the classic SID waveforms — pulse, sawtooth, triangle, and noise — with individual ADSR envelopes and independent routing to a resonant multimode filter. Each oscillator supports sync and ring modulation against the others, unlocking the metallic timbres and harmonic complexity that defined the C64 sound.

A dual arpeggiator running in series generates intricate patterns that capture the spirit of 8-bit game soundtracks. Two tempo-synced LFOs with extensive waveform options modulate pitch, pulse width, filter cutoff, and dirt, while the modulation envelope adds another layer of movement.

Selectable bit depth (4, 6, 8, 12, or 16-bit) with a randomization feature lets you dial in exactly how lo-fi and gritty you want the output. Pitch drift and bit drift model the analog instability of vintage hardware, adding organic imperfection to every patch.

The 128 factory presets by co-developer sink cover arps, leads, basslines, drums, and lo-fi textures. Pulse width modulation, oscillator detune, and a dedicated dirt parameter round out a surprisingly deep sound design toolset for a plugin focused on retro character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is basic 65 compatible with 64-bit DAWs?

No. basic 65 is a 32-bit Windows-only VST plugin built with SynthEdit 1.1. To use it in a modern 64-bit DAW, you will need a 32-to-64-bit bridge like jBridge or the free 32 Lives alternative on Windows.

What is the difference between basic 64 and basic 65?

basic 65 is a complete redesign of basic 64, rebuilt from scratch with expanded features. It adds a second arpeggiator running in series, per-oscillator ADSR envelopes, variable bit depth (4-16 bit), pitch drift modeling, and an entirely new preset bank of 128 sounds by co-developer sink.

Can basic 65 produce sounds beyond typical chiptune bleeps?

Yes. While it excels at classic 8-bit arps and leads, the ring modulation, oscillator sync, dual LFOs, and drift controls allow you to create fat basslines, drifting analog-style pads, glitchy textures, and rhythmic percussion. The 128 presets demonstrate this range across multiple categories.

Will de la Mancha release updates or a macOS version?

No. The developer has retired from plugin development and will not provide updates, bug fixes, or ports to macOS or other platforms. The plugin remains available as-is for Windows 32-bit VST hosts.
