Description
Blue Cat's Free Amp is a guitar amp simulation plugin built on the same modeling engine as Blue Cat Audio's commercial Destructor and Axiom products. It provides three distinct amp models — Classic Clean, Classic Drive, and Modern Drive — each paired with matching cabinet emulation, covering everything from pristine cleans to heavy distortion.
The control layout follows a familiar guitar amp workflow with Gain, Drive, a three-band EQ (Low, Mid, High), Tone, and Volume knobs. Each amp model has its own front panel design, keeping the interface clean and readable without unnecessary complexity.
Clean tones are a particular strength, delivering a warmth and responsiveness that most amp sims in this category overlook in favor of high-gain sounds. The Classic Drive model handles blues and rock crunch convincingly, while Modern Drive pushes into heavier territory for metal and hard rock riffing.
The built-in cabinet simulation cannot be fully bypassed, though setting the Tone knob to 100% provides a signal clean enough to pair with external impulse response loaders. Twenty-four factory presets are included, with additional presets available from Blue Cat Audio's website.
Processing runs at zero latency with automatic CPU idle detection, shutting down when fed silence. Full MIDI control, automation support, MIDI Learn, undo/redo, and a built-in preset manager round out the feature set across VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats on both macOS and Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the built-in cabinet simulation be bypassed to use external IRs?
The cabinet simulation cannot be fully bypassed through a dedicated switch. However, setting the Tone knob to 100% produces a signal clean enough to feed into a separate impulse response loader plugin for more cabinet flexibility.
How does Blue Cat's Free Amp compare to the paid Destructor plugin?
Free Amp uses the same core amp modeling technology as Destructor but is limited to three amp models with fixed cabinet pairings. Destructor offers a fully modular signal chain with dozens of amp and distortion models, cabinet simulation options, and extensive effects routing.
Does Blue Cat's Free Amp work well for metal guitar tones?
The Modern Drive model handles heavier styles reasonably well for rhythm and lead playing. For the tightest high-gain metal tones, pairing the plugin with an external noise gate and impulse response loader can improve the results significantly.
Can I use Blue Cat's Free Amp for bass guitar?
While designed primarily for guitar, the amp models can add harmonic character and drive to bass signals. The Classic Clean model works particularly well for adding subtle warmth to direct-recorded bass tracks.
