Description

BPB 64 is a sample-based virtual synthesizer that brings the raw, gritty sounds of the Commodore 64 home computer into modern DAWs. Developed by Bedroom Producers Blog in collaboration with SampleScience, it captures the direct audio output of the legendary SID chip without any additional processing.

The plugin includes 37 multi-sampled patches covering bass sounds, leads, pads, and the rapid-fire arpeggios that defined the C64 era. Each patch was sampled from three different Commodore 64 units fitted with different SID chips, providing a range of tonal characteristics from warm and smooth to bright and gnarly.

The MSSIAH cartridge was used to program the patches and trigger the hardware via MIDI, preserving the authentic behavior of the original chip. BPB 64 goes beyond simple sample playback with a low-pass filter, a full ADSR envelope, and four built-in effects: chorus, reverb, delay, and distortion.

Pitch modulation via the mod wheel adds expressive control, making it straightforward to recreate wobbly SID leads and detuned chiptune textures. The interface is clean and purpose-built, keeping all essential controls visible without menu-diving.

BPB 64 is available in VST, VST3, and AU formats for 64-bit DAWs on Windows and macOS. It loads quickly and has a light CPU footprint, making it practical for layering multiple instances across a project.

  • Experiment with the built-in effects to customize the presets.
  • Utilize the low-pass filter to shape the sound to your preference.
  • Combine the different patches to create unique textures and layers.
  • Adjust the ADSR envelope to control the attack, decay, sustain, and release of the sounds.
  • Use the modulation wheel to add dynamic pitch variations.
  • Integrate BPB 64 with other virtual instruments to enhance your compositions.
  • Explore the different SID chip variations to find the tonal quality that best fits your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SID chips were sampled for BPB 64?

BPB 64 was sampled from three different Commodore 64 units, each fitted with a different SID chip revision. This means the included patches span the tonal range of the SID family, from the warmer 6581 variants to the brighter 8580 models.

How does BPB 64 differ from Plogue chipsynth C64?

BPB 64 is a sample-based instrument that replays recordings of the actual SID chip hardware, while Plogue chipsynth C64 is a full synthesis emulation that models the SID circuitry in software. BPB 64 offers instant plug-and-play access to authentic C64 tones with built-in effects, whereas chipsynth C64 provides deeper sound design control at a deeper level of hardware emulation.

Can BPB 64 be used for genres outside of chiptune?

Yes. While the patches originate from a Commodore 64, the built-in filter, envelope, and effects let you shape them well beyond traditional chiptune. Producers use BPB 64 for synthwave basslines, lo-fi textural layers, and retro-flavored leads in electronic, hip-hop, and pop productions.

Does BPB 64 support MIDI modulation?

BPB 64 responds to the mod wheel for pitch modulation, allowing real-time vibrato and pitch bending during performance. Combined with the ADSR envelope, this gives you expressive control over each note's dynamics and pitch behavior.
