Description

Cardinal is a fully self-contained virtual modular synthesizer plugin built on the VCV Rack engine. Developed by falkTX under the DISTRHO project, it packages 1,382 modules from 84 different authors into a single binary that runs directly inside your DAW.

Unlike VCV Rack Pro, Cardinal loads no external modules and makes no network connections. Every module ships built in, which eliminates the DLL conflicts and library management headaches that can plague modular plugin setups.

The plugin ships in three variants: Main (8 audio I/O plus 10 CV ports), Synth (instrument mode with 2 outputs), and FX (effect mode with 2 I/O). This lets you load Cardinal in any host slot, whether your DAW expects an instrument, an effect, or a full modular environment with CV routing.

Included modules span oscillators, filters, sequencers, effects, and utilities from well-known open-source developers including Bogaudio, Surge XT, MindMeld, Impromptu Modular, and Audible Instruments (Mutable Instruments clones). The breadth of the collection covers everything from West Coast synthesis and generative sequencing to conventional subtractive patching.

Cardinal supports AudioUnit, CLAP, LV2, VST2, and VST3 formats on macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), Windows (32-bit and 64-bit), and Linux. A browser-based version is also available for quick experimentation without installing anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I load VCV Rack modules into Cardinal?

No. Cardinal is fully self-contained and does not support loading external VCV Rack modules or connecting to the VCV Rack library. All 1,382 included modules are compiled into the plugin binary, and only open-source GPLv3-compatible modules are eligible for inclusion.

What is the difference between the Main, Synth, and FX variants?

The Main variant provides 8 audio I/O and 10 CV ports but is only available in CLAP, LV2, and VST3 formats. The Synth variant works as a standard instrument plugin with 2 audio outputs, and the FX variant works as an audio effect with 2 inputs and 2 outputs. All three share the same module library and patching engine.

How does Cardinal compare to VCV Rack Pro?

Cardinal is completely open source and ships all modules built in, while VCV Rack Pro is a commercial product with access to the full VCV module library including paid modules. Cardinal supports more platforms (including Linux ARM, RISC-V, and browser) and offers LV2 and real CV port support. VCV Rack Pro has a larger module ecosystem and official support.

Does Cardinal work with Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. Cardinal provides universal macOS builds that run natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon processors. The macOS installer package covers both architectures in a single download.
