Description

Cello Moods is a solo cello instrument from Spitfire Audio's LABS collection, featuring emotive micro-performances recorded by celebrated folk cellist Alice Allen. With roots in Scottish Traditional music, Allen brings an expressive, organic playing style that translates naturally into four distinct emotional moods: Awe, Melancholy, Tension, and Wistfulness.

The library contains 16 presets spanning four keys (C, Dm, F#, and Gm), each performed in all four moods. Rather than offering standard sustained notes or staccato patches, Cello Moods captures improvised phrases and gestures that evolve dynamically over time, making each note feel like a miniature performance.

Composer and Spitfire Audio co-founder Christian Henson oversaw the recording sessions, capturing the performances in the same high-fidelity style that defines the broader LABS catalog. The result sounds remarkably close to a premium commercial library, with rich tonal depth and natural room ambience.

The phrase-based approach does mean the library works best when placed with intention rather than used for rapid melodic lines. Users have found it particularly effective when layered with other string instruments to add emotional weight and solo character to a mix.

Cello Moods runs inside the Spitfire Audio LABS plugin, available in AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.10 through 11, including Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows (7, 8, or 10). The download weighs 1.7 GB.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I hold a single note for a long time in Cello Moods?

Because Cello Moods uses phrase-based recordings rather than static sustains, holding a single note triggers an evolving performance that may include re-attacks, pitch shifts, and dynamic changes. This is by design and reflects Alice Allen's improvised playing style captured in the library.

Can Cello Moods be used for fast melodic passages or lead lines?

Cello Moods is optimized for slow, emotive phrases and atmospheric textures rather than rapid melodic playing. Each preset is an evolving micro-performance, so it works best when notes are placed deliberately with spacing between them.

How does LABS Cello Moods differ from Spitfire's paid solo cello libraries?

Paid Spitfire cello libraries like Solo Strings offer multiple articulations, round robins, and detailed dynamic control. Cello Moods focuses on mood-driven phrase performances in a simple interface, making it more of a creative texture tool than a traditional playable solo instrument.

Does Cello Moods require the full Kontakt sampler?

No. Cello Moods runs inside Spitfire Audio's own LABS plugin, which is a standalone instrument available in AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX formats. It does not use Kontakt at all.
