Double Freak
Key Features
- Tracks incoming audio pitch and drives two oscillator layers from the detected note.
- Sawtooth, square, and triangle wave choices let the added layer range from synth weight to rough replacement tones.
- Pitch envelope controls bend note starts up or down for exaggerated attacks and warped melodic movement.
- Independent or linked stereo tracking can create either focused mono-compatible results or wide left/right pitch separation.
- Two analog-modelled distortion modes process the mixed oscillator and dry signal path.
- Dry level and oscillator level controls allow full replacement, subtle thickening, or distortion-only use.
Description
Double Freak is a dual oscillator frequency follower that turns incoming audio into a pair of synth oscillators following the source pitch. Use it to thicken a vocal, replace a bassline with sharper waveform energy, or push a monophonic part into unstable synth-guitar territory.
The plugin works best when the input has a clear single note, because its tracking is intentionally loose and unpredictable on chords, drums, and atonal material. That limitation is part of the character: saw, square, and triangle oscillators can lock in tightly or smear behind the source for rougher movement.
A pitch envelope lets the start of each triggered note bend up or down, so melodic lines can hit with a warped transient before settling. Stereo channel linking can either keep the result focused or let left and right pitch tracking split apart for a wider, more chaotic image.
Double Freak also includes two analog-modelled distortion types after the mixer. Since the dry signal passes through that stage too, it can operate as a dedicated distortion effect with the oscillators turned down, not only as a pitch-following synth layer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of source material works best with Double Freak?
It is strongest on monophonic audio such as a single vocal line, bassline, or melody synth. Polyphonic and atonal sources can still be useful, but the pitch tracking is intentionally erratic there.
Can Double Freak be used as a normal distortion plugin?
Yes. The distortion stage sits after the mixer, so you can lower the oscillator levels, keep the dry signal up, and use the two analog-modelled distortion types on the original audio.
Does Double Freak create stereo effects?
Yes. Its channel-linking control can average pitch tracking across channels for a centered result, or let left and right channels track independently for a much wider and less predictable stereo image.
Is Double Freak a synth instrument or an audio effect?
It is an audio plugin placed on an audio or instrument track, not a keyboard-played synth by itself. The oscillators follow the pitch of whatever audio is fed into the plugin.
