Key Features

  • Three reverb algorithms (Simple, Nested, Tank) each with a distinct plate character and tail density
  • Based on Freeverb3's Nverb and STRev DSP algorithms for high-fidelity plate emulation
  • Decoupled Wet/Dry controls let you audition presets without changing mix levels
  • Pre-reverb Low Cut and High Cut filters shape the input signal before it reaches the reverb engine
  • Dampen control tames high-frequency feedback inside the reverb loop for smoother tails
  • Width control adjustable from 50% to 150% for narrow mono-compatible to extra-wide stereo spreads
  • Open-source and cross-platform with low CPU usage and an intuitive GUI by FistfulOfStars

Description

Dragonfly Plate Reverb is an open-source plate reverb plugin developed by Michael Willis, built on the Nverb and STRev algorithms from the Freeverb3 library. It delivers high-fidelity plate and tank reverb textures across three distinct algorithm types.

The Simple algorithm produces a thin plate sound with a sparse tail and subtle early reflections. The Nested algorithm generates a thicker, denser plate reverb with no early reflections, while the Tank algorithm is based on Jon Dattorro's Effect Design paper and creates a distinctive tank-style reverb character.

Each algorithm responds differently to the same parameter settings, giving producers a wide range of tonal options from a single plugin. Controls include Width, Predelay (up to 100 ms), and Decay (0.1 to 10 seconds), plus pre-reverb Low Cut and High Cut filters for shaping the input signal before it hits the reverb engine.

The Dampen control applies a low-pass filter to the reverb algorithm's internal feedback loop, letting you tame brightness in the reverb tail without affecting the dry signal. Wet and Dry levels are decoupled from presets, so you can audition different reverb textures without disrupting your mix balance.

Dragonfly Plate ships with a library of plate and tank presets and runs efficiently on CPU. The GUI, designed by FistfulOfStars, provides an intuitive visual interface that makes parameter adjustments straightforward even for less experienced users.

Tips

  • Experiment with different reverb types (Simple, Nested, Tank) to find the best fit for your track.
  • Use the Width control to adjust the stereo spread of the reverb.
  • Adjust the Predelay to create a sense of space and depth in your mix.
  • Utilize the Low cut and High cut settings to shape the reverb’s frequency response.
  • Apply the Dampen control to manage the brightness of the reverb tail.
  • Combine Dragonfly Plate Reverb with other reverb types (e.g., Hall, Room) for complex and rich spatial effects.
  • Use the separate Wet and Dry level controls to maintain consistent levels while switching presets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Simple, Nested, and Tank algorithms?

Simple produces a thin plate reverb with a sparse tail and slight early reflections. Nested creates a thicker, denser plate sound with no early reflections. Tank is based on Jon Dattorro's Effect Design paper and delivers a unique tank-style reverb character that differs from traditional plate emulations.

Does Dragonfly Plate Reverb require OpenGL?

Yes, the graphical interface requires OpenGL 3.0 or higher. Without a compatible GPU, the plugin may still load but the visual interface will not render. Most modern computers meet this requirement.

How does the Dampen control differ from the High Cut filter?

The High Cut filter shapes the signal before it enters the reverb algorithm, removing high frequencies from the input. The Dampen control applies a low-pass filter inside the reverb's feedback loop, progressively reducing brightness as the tail decays. Together they give independent control over the input tone and the reverb tail character.

Is Dragonfly Plate part of the Dragonfly Reverb bundle?

Yes, Dragonfly Plate is one of four plugins in the Dragonfly Reverb bundle alongside Hall, Room, and Early Reflections. All four are included in the same download package and can be installed together or individually.
