Description

EQ Classic OLD 2M is a four-band stereo equalizer by Pseudostereo (Yuri Semenov) that captures the tonal character of the EMI TG12412 mastering EQ from Abbey Road Studios. It traces its lineage through EMI's storied equalizer history, starting with the RS56 in 1954, continuing with the TG12345 in 1969, and culminating in the TG12412 of 1972.

The plugin operates in stereo, dual mono, or Mid/Side modes. Bringing differences between channel settings produces a wider, more voluminous sound that suits everything from subtle bus shaping to more pronounced stereo treatments.

Each of the four bands offers variable filter types for precise tonal adjustment. You can place shelves on any band and apply high-pass or low-pass filters wherever needed, giving this EQ unusual flexibility for a vintage-inspired design.

A random channel function adds subtle variation between left and right processing, similar to Brainworx's Tolerance Modeling Technology. An auto-switching play mode removes static behavior and adds liveliness, though it can be left at default for consistent results.

The interface features two selectable retro color schemes inspired by classic hardware. Integrated LUFS loudness metering provides real-time integrated, short-term, and momentary readings, which is an uncommon but practical addition for a four-band EQ plugin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware equalizer is EQ Classic OLD 2M based on?

EQ Classic OLD 2M is modeled on the tonal character of the EMI TG12412, a mastering equalizer used at Abbey Road Studios. The plugin does not add harmonic coloration to the signal but captures the curve shapes and musical response of the original analog unit from 1972.

What does the random channel function do?

The random channel function introduces subtle differences between the left and right channel processing, similar to Brainworx's Tolerance Modeling Technology. You can select a channel number manually or use the RNDM button for random selection. The Play button enables automatic switching to remove static behavior and add perceived liveliness.

Can EQ Classic OLD 2M be used for Mid/Side processing?

Yes. The plugin supports stereo, dual mono, and Mid/Side modes. In Mid/Side mode, you can independently shape the center (mid) and edges (side) of your stereo image, which is particularly useful for mastering and bus processing.
