Key Features

  • Four-operator FM engine with classic TX-style waveforms for bright digital basses, bells, keys, plucks, and pads
  • Eight FM algorithms with color-coded operator panels that make carrier and modulator roles easier to follow
  • Five-point drag-and-drop TX envelopes for each operator, with copy and paste for faster shaping
  • Live waveform visualization that reacts while you change operator levels, ratios, and algorithm choices
  • Modulation matrix with LFO and modulation envelope sources for pitch, filter, and operator movement
  • Resonant lowpass, highpass, and bandpass filter models plus a built-in chorus effect
  • Resizable vector interface with more than 90 categorized presets in the current 2.3.0 release

Description

Exakt Lite is a streamlined FM synthesizer plugin built around four operators, TX-style envelopes, and a visual workflow that makes classic digital FM easier to program. It covers metallic bells, punchy basses, glassy keys, animated plucks, and softer digital pads without forcing producers through a dense DX-style editing system.

The synth keeps the important character pieces from Sonicbits' larger Exakt instrument: classic TX waveforms, eight FM algorithms, feedback on operator D, a resonant filter, a syncable LFO, a modulation envelope, a modulation matrix, and a chorus effect. Color-coded operator panels and a live waveform display help show whether an operator is acting as a carrier or modulator, so small edits feel more predictable.

Version 2 rebuilt the plugin with a cleaner interface and broader preset library, and the current 2.3.0 release lists more than 90 presets for quick starting points. It is best treated as an approachable 4-operator FM instrument for writing and sound design rather than a full DX7 librarian, especially since the paid Exakt adds deeper envelopes, more algorithms, extra effects, and Yamaha sysex import.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Exakt Lite different from the paid Exakt synth?

Exakt Lite is the simpler version with 12 voices, 8 FM algorithms, one modulation envelope, a reduced modulation matrix, and a smaller preset library. The paid Exakt adds 16 voices, 16 algorithms, loopable 16-point envelopes, more LFOs and modulation envelopes, extra effects, DAC emulation, sysex import, and more presets.

Can Exakt Lite import Yamaha DX or TX sysex banks?

No. Sonicbits lists Yamaha 4-operator sysex bank import as a feature of the paid Exakt version, while Exakt Lite focuses on its built-in operators, algorithms, presets, modulation, filter, and chorus.

Is Exakt Lite beginner-friendly for FM synthesis?

It is more approachable than many older FM instruments because the operators are color-coded and the waveform display changes as you edit the sound. That makes it easier to understand how operator levels, ratios, and algorithms affect the final tone.

What kind of sounds does Exakt Lite suit best?

It suits classic digital FM sounds such as punchy basses, metallic bells, electric-style keys, sharp plucks, and synthetic pads. The TX-inspired waveforms and chorus also make it useful for 80s-flavored synthwave, electro, house, ambient, and game-music textures.
