Description
Filta Crunch 2.0 by SonicXTC recreates a classic studio insert signal chain designed to add depth, warmth, and grit to drums, instruments, and vocals. It combines three distinct processing stages in a single plugin: a Moog-style 2-pole 24dB resonant filter, a dual-channel tube amplifier drive modeled after 1970s Silvertone amps, and a three-mode waveshaper.
The filter section provides smooth analog-style frequency shaping with cutoff, resonance, and drive controls for everything from gentle low-pass sweeps to aggressive resonant squelches. The tube amp emulation adds harmonic richness and natural compression, behaving much like running a signal through vintage hardware.
The waveshaper rounds out the chain with three gain stages (gain, gain squared, and gain cubed) that range from subtle edge to full-on distortion. Combined with 128 user preset slots and full MIDI automation, the plugin covers a wide range of tonal coloring from warm tape-like saturation to harsh, lo-fi destruction.
Filta Crunch works particularly well on drum buses and individual instrument tracks where traditional EQ falls short. Users describe the sound as intentionally raw and characterful rather than pristine, making it a go-to for lo-fi textures, aggressive electronic production, and creative sound design.
The plugin runs as a 32-bit VST on Windows systems and requires minimal CPU resources, making it practical for projects with large track counts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of filter does Filta Crunch use?
Filta Crunch uses a classic Moog-style 2-pole 24dB resonant filter. It provides smooth analog-character sweeps with adjustable cutoff, resonance, and filter drive controls.
Can Filta Crunch be used for mastering?
While it was designed primarily as an insert effect for individual tracks, some producers use it on a master bus for color and character. The developer demo shows it applied as both a per-track effect and a mastering chain, though its lo-fi nature suits creative mastering rather than transparent processing.
Does Filta Crunch support 64-bit DAWs?
Filta Crunch 2.0 is a 32-bit VST plugin. To use it in a 64-bit DAW, you will need a bridging tool such as jBridge or the 32-bit bridge built into some DAWs.
What is the waveshaper section used for?
The waveshaper adds distortion and harmonic content after the filter and tube stages. It offers three gain modes (gain, gain squared, and gain cubed) that progressively increase the intensity, ranging from subtle edge to aggressive clipping.
