Key Features

  • Dual 12 dB resonant high-pass and low-pass filters that operate independently for precise frequency shaping
  • Modeled tube preamp circuit based on Audio Assault's commercial GrindMachine amplifier algorithms
  • Crush mode that overdrives the tube stage for aggressive distortion and parallel processing applications
  • Zero-latency operation suitable for real-time tracking and live performance
  • Optimized for low CPU usage, allowing multiple instances across large sessions
  • Transparent filter response at low resonance for clean frequency cleanup, with creative coloration at higher settings

Description

FilterCrusher is a dual tube filter effect plugin developed by Audio Assault and designed in collaboration with Bedroom Producers Blog. It combines a pair of independently adjustable 12 dB resonant high-pass and low-pass filters with a modeled tube preamp circuit derived from the same algorithms used in Audio Assault's commercial GrindMachine guitar amplifier software.

At low resonance settings, the filters sound transparent enough for surgical cleanup work on the top and bottom ends of a mix. Increasing resonance transforms them into creative tools for filter sweeps, frequency emphasis, and emulating analog circuit coloration.

The tube saturation circuit runs the full range from barely perceptible warmth to aggressive overdrive, adding subtle analog character and helping smooth out dynamics in its default mode. Engaging the dedicated Crush button pushes the input gain hard into the tube stage, delivering audible distortion suited to parallel processing at a 10-20% wet mix or full-send sound destruction.

The plugin runs at zero latency with minimal CPU overhead, making it practical for real-time tracking and large sessions. It uses the same core modeling technology behind Audio Assault's professional guitar amp plugins, packaged here in a focused, easy-to-use interface.

FilterCrusher is available in 32-bit and 64-bit VST and AU formats for Windows and macOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the normal mode and Crush mode?

In normal mode, the tube circuit adds mild analog saturation and gently evens out dynamics. Crush mode boosts the input gain into the tube stage, producing clearly audible distortion. For aggressive sounds without overwhelming the mix, try using Crush mode on a parallel bus at 10-20% wet.

Is FilterCrusher based on real hardware or original algorithms?

The tube preamp modeling uses the same algorithms found in Audio Assault's commercial GrindMachine virtual guitar amplifier. It is a software-modeled tube circuit rather than a direct hardware emulation, but it draws on proven commercial-grade DSP.

Was the noise burst issue in version 1.0 fixed?

Yes. Version 1.01, released in January 2015, fixed a memory leak that caused a noise burst when loading the plugin in certain host applications. Make sure you are running the latest version from the download page.

Can the high-pass and low-pass filters be used independently?

Yes. Both filters operate independently with separate cutoff and resonance controls. You can use just one filter while leaving the other fully open, or combine them for bandpass-style effects and creative frequency shaping.
