Description

Fire by Blue Wings Music is an open-source multiband distortion plugin that splits incoming audio into up to four independent frequency bands, each with its own drive, compressor, stereo width, and mix controls. The adjustable crossover points and real-time spectrogram let you target exactly which frequencies get pushed into saturation.

The distortion engine offers multiple algorithms across four categories: soft clipping, hard clipping, foldback, and experimental modes. Each band also includes a sound shaper with rectification and bias controls, giving you precise command over harmonic content from subtle warmth to aggressive destruction.

A dedicated global effects section adds a multimode EQ with lowcut, highcut, and peak filters, plus a downsampler for lo-fi texture and a limiter for taming peaks. Four fully customizable LFOs with a graphical editor and modulation matrix can be routed to nearly any parameter, adding rhythmic movement to your distortion.

The plugin features 4x oversampling to reduce aliasing artifacts, A/B comparison for quick preset evaluation, and a full preset management system with save, load, and import. Link Output mode automatically compensates gain when you push the drive harder, while Safe Output prevents unexpected volume spikes.

Built with the JUCE framework, Fire runs on Windows and macOS in VST3, AU, and CLAP formats. The entire project is publicly available on GitHub, where the developer actively maintains the codebase and accepts community contributions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What distortion types does Fire include?

Fire provides multiple distortion algorithms organized into four categories: soft clipping, hard clipping, foldback, and experimental modes. Each band can use a different algorithm, and the sound shaper adds rectification and bias controls for further harmonic sculpting.

How many frequency bands can Fire process simultaneously?

Fire supports up to four independent frequency bands with adjustable crossover points. Each band has its own drive, compressor, stereo width, and mix controls, letting you apply different distortion intensities to different parts of the frequency spectrum.

Does Fire support LFO modulation?

Yes, Fire includes four fully customizable LFOs that can be synced to BPM or run freely in Hz. The graphical LFO editor supports both edit and brush drawing modes, and a modulation matrix lets you route any LFO to nearly any plugin parameter.

What does the Link Output feature do?

Link Output automatically reduces the output level as you increase the drive amount, maintaining a consistent volume. This prevents sudden loudness jumps when dialing in more distortion, making it easier to judge the tonal change without being fooled by volume differences.
