Description

Frohmage by Ohm Force is a cult classic multi-band resonant filter plugin, originally released in 2001 and maintained for over two decades. The updated version, Frohmager, brings a sleek new interface along with the brand new Macros² system and a full modulation matrix, while preserving the distinctive character that earned millions of downloads worldwide.

At its core sits a highly resonant low-pass filter with cutoff frequency selectable in Hz or musical note values. Up to 15 additional harmonically distributed bands can be layered on top, introducing comb filtering and phasing-like textures that go far beyond typical filter sweeps.

A built-in distortion stage with two routing schemes adds warmth, grit, and harmonic richness directly within the filter circuit. Combined with the resonance controls, this makes the plugin especially effective as a tone-shaping tool for guitars, synths, and any source that needs added character.

The modulation engine now includes LFOs, envelope followers, and ADSR generators, all of which can modulate each other for complex, evolving parameter movement. The Macros² system allows unprecedented live expression and rapid preset exploration, making it well suited for both studio work and live performance.

Supported hosts include Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Cubase, Nuendo, Studio One, REAPER, FL Studio, Reason, Maschine, and Cakewalk by BandLab. Grammy award-winning producer Stuart Price has cited Frohmage as the plugin that started his relationship with Ohm Force's entire lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Frohmage and Frohmager?

Frohmager is the updated version of the original Frohmage, released in 2023. It keeps the same core filter engine but adds a completely redesigned interface, a full modulation matrix with LFOs, envelope followers, and ADSR generators, plus the new Macros² system for expressive control. Both are available for download from Ohm Force.

Can I modulate filter parameters with external MIDI controllers?

Yes. Frohmage supports very fine 14-bit MIDI control via PRN and NRPN messages, which provides much higher resolution than standard 7-bit CC messages. This makes it well suited for expressive hardware control during live performance or studio automation.

Does Frohmage work well on guitars and bass?

Absolutely. Users frequently praise the plugin for adding character to guitar tracks, particularly when combining the resonant filter with the distortion stage. The envelope follower in the updated Frohmager version makes it especially responsive to dynamic playing, similar to an auto-wah or envelope filter pedal.

Is the original legacy version of Frohmage still available?

Ohm Force made all of their legacy plugins available as freeware, including the original Frohmage along with Ohmicide, Quad Frohmage, and others. However, the legacy versions are no longer supported. The current Frohmager release is recommended for modern DAW compatibility.
