Description
FSVR (Formant Synthesizer Virtual Rack) is an open-source software reconstruction of Yamaha's FS1R, bringing its unusual formant-shaping and FM voice architecture into a DAW or standalone setup. It targets the bright, metallic, vocal-like, and shifting timbres associated with the original while exposing a much more direct graphical editor.
The instrument runs four parts across 32 channels and includes the FS1R-style filter, two LFOs, pan, three effects blocks, performances, and formant-sequence playback. Its browser includes the original factory voice, performance, and formant-sequence data, while the bank manager accepts user SysEx libraries.
FSVR also adds modern workflow tools that the rack unit did not have. A morph square helps move between sounds, and Import Audio can create material for formant sequences, making the synth useful for animated textures as well as classic FM electric pianos, bells, basses, and digital pads.
This is an active early-stage reconstruction rather than a finished hardware clone. The developer reports that the synthesis engine is closely measured against a real FS1R, while the effects processor remains modelled work in progress, so effects-heavy patches may differ from the original hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is FSVR modelled after?
FSVR is a software reconstruction of Yamaha's 1998 FS1R, a rack synthesizer known for combining FM synthesis with formant-shaping oscillators. It rewrites the hardware's logic in C++ rather than running the original processor firmware.
Can FSVR load sounds from an FS1R?
Yes. The developer describes a bank manager for personal .syx libraries and support for FS1R SysEx import, alongside the included factory voice, performance, and formant-sequence material.
What formats does FSVR provide?
The current release supplies VST3, CLAP, VST2, and standalone builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux. macOS also has AU, and Windows includes a 32-bit VST2 build with DXi.
Does FSVR exactly match the original FS1R?
Not yet. The developer says the tone-generator and firmware-side logic have been closely checked against a real unit, but the effects DSP is still modelled rather than fully measured, so reverb and effect tails can differ.
