Key Features

  • Maximizing limiter that boosts perceived loudness while preventing clipping beyond a user-defined ceiling
  • Three-control interface (Gain, Ceiling, Release) for fast, no-fuss setup across any session
  • Real-time gain-reduction meter for visual feedback on how hard the limiter is working
  • Effective on individual tracks for taming peaks on vocals, synths, and drums before further processing
  • Equally suited for bus and master channel duties to push overall mix loudness
  • Lightweight single-file plugin with no installer required, just drop the DLL or component into your plugin folder

Description

GMax by GVST is a maximizing limiter that boosts perceived loudness by increasing signal level while preventing peaks from exceeding a set ceiling. It handles everything from subtle peak taming on individual tracks to full-mix loudness maximization.

The interface is deliberately minimal, featuring just three controls. Gain sets the boost amount before the limiter stage, Ceiling defines the absolute peak output level, and Release adjusts how quickly the limiter recovers after clamping a transient.

A gain-reduction meter on the right side of the GUI shows exactly how much limiting is being applied in real time. This visual feedback makes it easy to dial in the right amount of gain without over-compressing.

For light peak suppression on individual tracks like vocals, synths, or hard drum hits, short release times keep the limiting invisible. For bus or master duties where you want consistent loudness, longer release settings smooth out the overall level.

Developed by Graham Yeadon under the GVST label, GMax is part of a suite of lightweight, single-file plugins that drop straight into any VST host without an installer. Users on Gearspace and Plugins4Free praise it as a dependable everyday limiter with a slightly more aggressive character than other options in the category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a maximizer the same as a limiter?

A maximizer is a specific type of limiter. While a standard limiter simply prevents audio from exceeding a threshold, a maximizer like GMax actively boosts the signal level first (via the Gain control) and then limits the result, making the overall audio sound louder without clipping. The combination of gain staging and brickwall limiting in one plugin is what defines a maximizer.

Can GMax be used on individual tracks or only on the master bus?

GMax works well in both scenarios. On individual tracks, it can tame exceptional peaks on vocals, synths, or hard-hitting drums using short release times before other processing. On the master bus, it functions as a loudness maximizer with longer release settings for a more consistent overall level.

What is the difference between GMax and GVST's GSatMax?

GMax is a clean maximizing limiter that boosts and limits without adding coloration. GSatMax adds a saturated, wave-shaping drive stage before the limiter, giving the signal analog-style warmth and harmonic distortion. Choose GMax for transparent peak control and GSatMax when you want deliberate saturation character.
