Description

Initial Clipper by Initial Audio is a soft clipper plugin that catches peaks before they reach your limiter, replacing harsh digital clipping with smooth saturation and harmonics. Now in its second major version, Clipper 2 introduces a redesigned interface with real-time pre/post waveform scope, a ceiling control for locking output levels, and integrated LUFS metering.

The controls cover the full soft-clipping workflow in a single window. Input Gain drives the signal into the clipper, Threshold sets where full saturation begins with a soft knee for smooth transitions, and the Saturation curve lets you fine-tune harmonic content from subtle mix-bus glue to aggressive drum clipping.

The built-in LUFS meter reads Integrated, Short-Term, Momentary, and Loudness Range values, so you can match loudness while A/B-ing settings without loading a separate metering plugin. The Ceiling knob ensures your output never exceeds a set level, which is especially useful when preparing mixes for streaming platform targets.

Users on KVR praise the sound quality, noting it performs well when not overdriven and delivers clean, transparent results on buses and master chains. The dark GUI with teal and purple accents is widely regarded as one of the better-looking interfaces among plugins in this category.

Initial Clipper 2 runs as VST3, AU, and AAX on macOS 10.14 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows 7 or later, both 64-bit only. The download is approximately 30 MB and requires a free Initial Audio account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What changed between the original Initial Clipper and Clipper 2?

Clipper 2 adds a redesigned dark interface, a higher-resolution real-time scope, a new Ceiling control for locking your output level, and a built-in LUFS meter with Integrated, Short-Term, Momentary, and Loudness Range readings. The core soft-clipping engine and saturation controls carry over from version 1.

Can Initial Clipper be used on individual tracks or only on the master bus?

It works on both. Many producers insert it on drum buses to tame transients and add punch, while others use it on the master chain before a limiter to catch peaks. The saturation curve can be set very low for transparent peak control on individual channels.

Does Initial Clipper 2 support Apple Silicon natively?

Yes. Clipper 2 runs natively on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) as well as Intel Macs. It requires macOS 10.14 Mojave or later.

Do I need to create an account to download Initial Clipper?

Yes. Initial Audio requires a free account on their website to unlock the download link. No payment or subscription is needed.
