Description
Le Phonk by Xynth Audio packs three aggressive processing stages into a single plugin: a six-mode distortion engine, OTT-style multiband compression, and a soft clipper. It is built for producers who want to add punch, grit, and loudness to drums, basses, and full mixes without juggling multiple effects.
The distortion section (called Zekete) offers six wildly different algorithms. Ungh delivers versatile wave-shaping that ranges from warm saturation to active distortion, while Beef adds crunchier filtering and Tub of Gravy pushes the signal through up to 200 all-pass filters for a dispersed, phaser-like smear.
Woah Haha uses sinusoidal wave-shaping for a unique harmonic texture, and Glumbis combines simple shaping with subtle dispersion. Scrimbly applies fold-back wave-shaping for extreme signal destruction.
The Le Ottz section is a simplified OTT compressor controlled by a single rotary knob, with an adjustable time control and a multiplier that lets you stack compression layers for increasingly crushed dynamics. At higher settings it pushes the room sound to the forefront, making it effective for parallel processing on drums and vocals.
The Le Fonz soft clipper tames peaks at the output stage, rounding off transients and adding a final layer of density. A real-time transfer curve display provides visual feedback as you dial in each distortion mode.
Multiple interface skins give the plugin a customizable look. The open-source MIT-licensed codebase (built on the JUCE framework) means community contributions continue to refine the project.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the six distortion modes in Le Phonk and how do they differ?
Le Phonk includes Ungh (versatile wave-shaping from subtle saturation to aggressive distortion), Beef (crunchier shaping with additional filtering), Tub of Gravy (up to 200 all-pass filters for a dispersed, phaser-like smear), Woah Haha (sinusoidal wave-shaping), Glumbis (simple shaping with subtle dispersion), and Scrimbly (fold-back wave-shaping for extreme destruction). Each mode has a distinct character suited to different levels of aggression.
How does the OTT section in Le Phonk work?
The Le Ottz section is a simplified multiband compressor modeled after the OTT (Over The Top) compression style. A single rotary knob controls the compression amount, while a time parameter adjusts attack and release speed. The multiplier lets you stack multiple layers of compression for increasingly crushed dynamics.
Can I use Le Phonk for subtle saturation or is it only for extreme effects?
While Le Phonk is designed with aggressive processing in mind, the Ungh distortion mode delivers usable saturation at lower settings before crossing into heavy distortion territory. The mix control on the distortion engine also lets you blend in a dry signal for parallel processing, keeping the effect more controlled.
