Key Features

  • Four independently controllable frequency bands, each with 13 distortion types ranging from hard clipping to tube simulations and waveshaping curves
  • Per-band compressor and expander dynamics processing for precise control over each frequency range's response
  • Mono-to-stereo widener that adds spatial dimension to mono sources without requiring additional effects
  • Creative feedback generator that emulates guitar amplifier feedback character across the frequency spectrum
  • Integrated preset morphing system that smoothly transitions between up to eight stored presets over adjustable morph time
  • Resonant lowpass filter with variable shape and cutoff frequency on the output stage, paired with a feedback delay
  • Full MIDI automation for all parameters, enabling real-time performance control and DAW integration

Description

Legacy Predatohm by Ohm Force is a four-band distortion plugin with independent compressor and expander controls on each band. Originally released in 2002, it pioneered the concept of multiband distortion processing and introduced Ohm Force's signature "phat/sharp - clean/loud" control scheme.

Each of the four frequency bands offers 13 distortion types, including hard clipping, six tube simulations, and six waveshaping curves. The crossover points between bands are fully adjustable, letting you target specific frequency ranges for independent processing.

Beyond distortion, Predatohm includes a stereo widener for converting mono signals to stereo and a creative feedback generator that emulates the character of guitar amp feedback. The output stage features a resonant lowpass filter with variable shape and cutoff frequency, followed by a feedback delay stage.

One of Predatohm's standout features is its integrated preset morphing system, which stores up to eight presets and smoothly transitions between them over a user-defined morph time. All parameters are fully automatable via MIDI for real-time control within any DAW.

Ohm Force made Predatohm available as a legacy plugin in August 2023, along with seven other titles from their catalog. The plugin supports macOS (up to 10.16, Intel only) and Windows (XP or later, 32-bit and 64-bit), but does not support Apple Silicon natively.

Tips

  • Experiment with different distortion types on each frequency band to find unique sound textures.
  • Use the stereo widening feature to enhance the spatial quality of mono tracks.
  • Apply subtle distortion to vocals for added warmth and character.
  • Utilize the feedback generator for creative sound design and special effects.
  • Automate parameters via MIDI to create dynamic and evolving soundscapes.
  • Combine Predatohm with other effects like reverb and delay for more complex audio processing.
  • Save and recall presets to quickly access your favorite settings during production sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Predatohm a mono or stereo plugin?

Predatohm processes audio in mono. However, it includes a built-in stereo widener on the output that can expand the mono signal into a pseudo-stereo field, which is useful for adding width to mono sources like bass or vocals.

What is the difference between Predatohm and Ohmicide?

Both are multiband distortion plugins from Ohm Force, but Ohmicide offers significantly more distortion algorithms (over 80 compared to Predatohm's 13 per band), stereo processing, and more advanced routing options. Predatohm is simpler and more focused, making it quicker to dial in useful tones.

Does Predatohm work on Apple Silicon Macs?

No, Predatohm does not support Apple Silicon natively. It only runs on Intel-based Macs with macOS up to 10.16. You may be able to run it through Rosetta 2 translation, but Ohm Force does not provide support for legacy plugins.

How does the preset morphing feature work?

Predatohm can store up to eight presets using its preset buttons. When you recall a different preset, the plugin smoothly transitions all control positions from the current state to the new preset values over a user-defined morph time, creating evolving tonal shifts during performance.
