Modular Synth VCO
Key Features
- Four sampled VCO waveforms (sawtooth, rectangle, triangle, sine) captured from a real Doepfer A-110-1 analog module with authentic circuit imperfections
- Built-in effects chain with distortion, delay, chorus, and reverb for complete sound shaping within the plugin
- Switchable lowpass and highpass filter with multi-wave LFO for adding motion and tonal variation to patches
- Three voice modes — polyphonic, monophonic, and legato — covering chords, leads, and glide-based playing styles
- Amplitude ADSR envelope with preamp and glide parameters for precise control over attack, decay, sustain, and release
- 25 factory presets spanning deep basses, ethereal pads, thick leads, and soft keys as starting points for sound design
Description
Modular Synth VCO by SampleScience is a sample-based virtual instrument built from waveforms captured directly from the Doepfer A-110-1 analog oscillator module. The four primary waveforms — sawtooth, rectangle, triangle, and sine — retain the instabilities and imperfections of the original hardware, giving every patch a distinctly organic analog character.
The signal path pairs those oscillators with a switchable lowpass/highpass filter, an amplitude ADSR envelope, and a multi-wave LFO for movement and modulation. A built-in effects chain adds distortion, delay, chorus, and reverb, letting you shape sounds without reaching for external processors.
Three voice modes — polyphonic, monophonic, and legato — make it equally suited for stacking chords, playing single-note leads, or gliding between pitches. The plugin ships with 25 factory presets covering deep basses, ethereal pads, thick leads, and soft keys.
While the modulation routing is straightforward compared to a full modular environment, that simplicity is part of the appeal. The effects complement the sampled oscillator well, and the intentional waveform imperfections give results a warmth that many digital synths struggle to achieve.
This instrument caters to producers who want textured analog tones without a complex interface. It excels at lo-fi and vintage-flavored sounds, though the four waveforms and effects section offer enough range to work in electronic, ambient, and experimental contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Doepfer A-110-1 module that Modular Synth VCO is based on?
The Doepfer A-110-1 is a standard voltage-controlled oscillator module from the Eurorack modular synthesizer world. SampleScience sampled its four primary waveforms directly from the hardware, capturing the subtle instabilities and imperfections in the analog circuitry that give it a distinctive organic sound.
Are the 25 factory presets compatible with all DAWs?
The FXP preset collection works with the VST and VST3 versions of the plugin in most DAWs. However, the presets are not compatible with Logic Pro when using the AU version. You can still create and save your own patches manually in Logic.
How does Modular Synth VCO compare to a full modular synthesizer plugin?
It focuses specifically on recreating the sound of one analog VCO module rather than providing a patchable modular environment. The trade-off is simplicity — you get authentic Doepfer oscillator tones with a straightforward interface, but without the deep modulation routing of plugins like VCV Rack or Softube Modular.
Can Modular Synth VCO produce sounds beyond lo-fi tones?
Yes. While it excels at lo-fi and vintage textures, the four waveforms combined with the filter, LFO, and effects chain can produce a wide range of sounds including deep basses, ethereal pads, thick leads, and experimental textures suitable for electronic and ambient music.
