Description

Philteroid by Phuturetone is a dual filter effect plugin inspired by the Sherman Filterbank 2 analog hardware unit. Originally developed for the KVR Developer Challenge 2012, it delivers flexible frequency shaping and sound mangling capabilities on rhythmic material like drums, bass, synths, and guitars.

The plugin pairs two resonant filters with a filter type blend control that morphs smoothly between lowpass, bandpass, highpass, notch, and allpass modes. Parallel and serial routing options let you stack or split the two filters for everything from precise tonal sculpting to aggressive, unpredictable textures.

Beyond standard filtering, Philteroid includes FM synthesis, AM modulation, and a saturation stage that can transform plain audio into sounds with distinctive character. Modulation sources run deep: ADSR envelopes, envelope followers, tempo-synced LFOs, key tracking, and external audio input all feed into the frequency and amplitude sections.

The patch randomize function is a standout feature that generates unexpected filter configurations, making it a useful sound design tool for electronic producers working in drum and bass, techno, and experimental genres. Users consistently highlight its ability to create gritty, textured results that punch well above its weight class.

Philteroid runs as a 32-bit VST plugin on Windows. It was built with SynthEdit and includes 128 user patch slots, 12 assignable I/O routing slots, and full automation support for all interface controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Philteroid inspired by any hardware unit?

Philteroid was designed with the Sherman Filterbank 2 analog filter unit as its primary inspiration. It aims to recreate the aggressive, characterful filtering and modulation capabilities of that hardware in software form.

What modulation sources does Philteroid offer?

Philteroid includes ADSR envelopes, AR envelopes, envelope followers, tempo-synced LFOs, key tracking (MIDI), FM from the audio signal itself, and external audio input. Both the frequency and amplitude sections can be modulated independently.

Can Philteroid be used for more than just filtering?

Yes. Beyond its dual filters, Philteroid functions as an envelope shaper, expander, noise gate, and ring modulator through its amplitude modulation sources. The FM and saturation stages also let it work as a creative distortion and sound design tool.

What does the patch randomize function do?

The randomize button generates random filter and modulation configurations with a single click. Users praise its algorithm for producing musically useful results, making it especially effective for creating unexpected variations on drum loops and rhythmic material.
