Description

Sonatina Orchestra Module by Bigcat Instruments packs a complete orchestral sample library into a single VST rompler. Built on Mattias Westlund's creative commons-licensed Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra recordings, it delivers 20 instruments and over 50 articulations spanning strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, choir, harp, and piano.

Every major orchestral section is represented with both solo and ensemble patches. Solo instruments cover violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, and trombone.

Full section ensembles fill out the remaining roster including viola and double bass, which are only available as group patches rather than soloists.

Articulations go well beyond basic sustains, with pizzicato and staccato patches for the string sections and staccato variations for brass and woodwinds. The percussion section rounds things out with a solid selection of orchestral hits and rolls.

Inspired by Sample Science's Orion Sound Module, the plugin was designed to run efficiently on modest hardware. Each instrument loads individually and typically uses around 50 MB of RAM, with the choir being the largest patch at roughly 250 MB.

The entire module weighs just over 1 GB on disk and downloads as a 650 MB compressed archive.

The rompler ships as both 32-bit and 64-bit VST builds for Windows, with an additional macOS VST version available. It requires no external sampler or player engine, making it a self-contained orchestral toolkit that loads directly in any compatible DAW.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sample library does Sonatina Orchestra Module use?

It uses Mattias Westlund's Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, a creative commons-licensed collection of orchestral recordings. Bigcat Instruments packaged the entire library into a standalone VST rompler so it loads without needing an external sampler.

How much RAM does Sonatina Orchestra Module use?

Each instrument loads individually and typically uses around 50 MB of RAM. The choir is the largest patch at roughly 250 MB. Since instruments load separately rather than all at once, the plugin stays lightweight even on older machines.

Which solo instruments are included?

The module includes solo patches for violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, and trombone. Viola and double bass are available as section ensembles only, not as solo instruments.

Does Sonatina Orchestra Module require Kontakt or another sampler?

No. It is a self-contained VST rompler that loads directly in your DAW. The samples are built into the plugin itself, so there is no need for Kontakt, SFZ players, or any other third-party sampler engine.
