ToTape9
Key Features
- Completely rebuilt tape saturation core based on the TapeHack2 algorithm, producing rich harmonic saturation with natural high-frequency compression
- Tilt control using Dubly-style processing that mimics physical tape machine brightness and darkness adjustments
- Shape slider transitions between vintage old-school sonority and modern studio character
- HeadBmp and HeadFrq controls for targeted bass emphasis inspired by real tape head bump behavior
- Flutter with adjustable speed adds organic pitch variation from subtle warmth to deliberate tape wobble
- New output clipping stage combining dithered aliasing with ClipOnly2 technology for musical clipping without upsampling artifacts
- Available as standalone AU/VST2 and through Airwindows Consolidated (CLAP, AU, VST3, LV2) for all platforms
Description
ToTape9 is the ninth iteration of Airwindows' flagship tape emulation, with the saturation core completely rebuilt using techniques developed for the TapeHack2 algorithm. The Input slider drives saturation and compression simultaneously, producing what developer Chris describes as "juicy saturation, blooming low-end, and high-frequency compression."
The Tilt control adjusts brightness or darkness using Dubly-style processing that mimics adjustments on a physical tape machine. Shape shifts between old-school sonority and a more refined studio character, while Bias adjusts the virtual tape biasing characteristics.
HeadBmp and HeadFrq provide targeted bass emphasis controls inspired by tape head bump behavior. Flutter adds organic pitch variation ranging from subtle movement to deliberately wonky tape warble, with FlutterSpd controlling the rate.
A new output clipping stage combines dithered aliasing with ClipOnly2 technology. At the default 0.5 setting it provides subtle clipping; pushing it further delivers a "beyond tape slam" quality with edge-sample processing that handles intersample clipping without upsampling or downsampling.
ToTape9 is available as a standalone AU/VST2 download and also through Airwindows Consolidated, which bundles all Airwindows plugins into a single CLAP/AU/VST3/LV2 binary. The plugin is open-source under the MIT license.

Frequently Asked Questions
What changed in ToTape9 compared to previous versions?
The entire saturation algorithm was replaced with one derived from TapeHack2. The developer describes the result as sounding "huge" compared to earlier iterations. A new output clipping stage using ClipOnly2 technology was also added.
How do I get ToTape9 in VST3 or CLAP format?
The standalone ToTape9.zip includes AU and VST2 formats only. For VST3, CLAP, or LV2, download Airwindows Consolidated from GitHub, which bundles every Airwindows plugin into a single multi-format binary.
Does ToTape9 use oversampling?
No. ToTape9 handles Gibbs effect overslew and intersample clipping without applying upsampling or downsampling. The plugin is designed to soak up highs like real tape while maintaining low CPU usage.
Can I use ToTape9 for mastering?
Yes. At gentle settings the tape saturation adds subtle warmth and high-frequency taming suitable for mastering buses. The output clipping stage at its default 0.5 position provides transparent limiting behavior.
