Description

Vital is a spectral warping wavetable synthesizer developed by Matt Tytel, released in November 2020. It offers three wavetable oscillators with individual waveshapers, unison modes, and phase adjustment, routed through two filters with over 30 selectable types including analog and digital models.

The built-in wavetable editor lets you create wavetables from scratch, import audio directly from samples using pitch-splice or vocode converters, and even generate wavetables from text. Spectral warping acts on a waveform's harmonics, allowing you to stretch, shift, smear, and skew harmonics to explore entirely new timbres from simple source material.

Modulation is handled through a drag-and-drop system with real-time visual feedback, supporting custom LFO shapes, snappy envelopes, and randomized sources like Perlin noise. Nine built-in effects including reverb, delay, chorus, distortion, and a multiband compressor can all be reordered and modulated.

Vital has earned multiple KVR Readers Choice Awards (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025) and is widely regarded as rivaling paid wavetable synths in both sound quality and workflow. The core synthesis engine is identical across all editions, from the Basic tier through to Vital Pro.

Vital runs on Windows 10+, macOS 10.12+, and Ubuntu 18.04+ as a VST, VST3, AU, LV2, CLAP, or standalone application. An OpenGL 3-capable GPU is required for the animated interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Vital synth cost?

Vital Basic is completely free and includes the full synthesis engine with 75 presets and 25 wavetables. Paid tiers (Plus at $25, Pro at $80, or a $5/month subscription) add more presets and wavetables, but the core sound engine and all features are identical across every edition.

What is the difference between Vital and Serum?

Both are wavetable synthesizers with drag-and-drop modulation and built-in wavetable editors. Vital adds spectral warping for harmonic manipulation, animated visual feedback across its entire interface, and native Linux support. Serum has a larger third-party preset ecosystem and has been the industry standard since 2014, while Vital offers comparable sound quality and workflow at no cost.

Does Vital support CLAP format?

Yes, Vital supports CLAP alongside VST, VST3, AU, and LV2 formats. CLAP support was added in later updates, making Vital compatible with CLAP-supporting hosts like Bitwig Studio and Reaper.

Can you import your own wavetables into Vital?

Yes, Vital can import audio files and convert them into wavetables using its pitch-splice or vocode converters. You can also create wavetables from scratch in the built-in editor, generate them from text descriptions, and drag in single-cycle waveforms or Serum-compatible wavetable files.
