Description
Zebralette is a spectral synthesizer from u-he that packs one of Zebra's oscillators into a streamlined, standalone instrument. Despite housing only a single oscillator, the engine delivers a remarkable range of tonal possibilities through its 16-slot waveset architecture and 24 spectral effects, including filters, sync, scatter, and phase distortion algorithms.
The oscillator supports waveform editing across four modes: geomorph, spectromorph, geoblend, and spectroblend. These modes allow deep manipulation of harmonic content, producing everything from crystalline pads and evolving textures to aggressive basses and metallic leads.
Modulation comes courtesy of an ADSR envelope, a multi-stage envelope generator (MSEG), two LFOs (one per-voice and one global), and a flexible mod matrix. Polyphony extends up to 16 voices with additional monophonic and legato modes, plus unison (superwave) for thickening patches.
Built-in effects include chorus, EQ, delay, and reverb, providing enough processing to shape sounds without leaving the plugin. The spectral effects section stands out as particularly powerful, offering squelchy filter algorithms and unusual timbral transformations that give Zebralette a sonic character unlike most conventional wavetable synths.
Sounds created in Zebralette are fully compatible with Zebra, making it both a capable instrument on its own and a gateway to u-he's flagship synthesizer. The plugin runs efficiently on CPU and ships with a large library of factory presets alongside an active community producing additional sound banks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I load Zebralette presets into Zebra?
Yes. Sounds created in Zebralette are fully compatible with Zebra. If you later upgrade to the full Zebra synthesizer, all your Zebralette patches carry over and you can expand them using Zebra's additional oscillators and modules.
How does Zebralette 3 differ from the original Zebralette?
Zebralette 3 is built on the oscillator engine from the upcoming Zebra 3 rather than Zebra 2. It adds an MSEG envelope, a mod matrix, reverb, and updated spectral effects. The GUI has been redesigned, and the plugin is now 64-bit only with CLAP support.
What are spectral effects and how do they work?
Spectral effects process the harmonic spectrum of the oscillator rather than the audio signal directly. They manipulate individual partials to create unusual filter-like sweeps, sync-style tearing, and timbral shifts that standard subtractive filters cannot replicate. Zebralette includes 24 of these spectral processors.
Does Zebralette support Linux?
Yes, Zebralette 3 supports Linux with CLAP and VST3 formats. However, u-he considers Linux support to be in beta and cannot provide the same level of support as for macOS and Windows. You need glibc 2.28 or newer.
