606 Koncept

606 Koncept

by Sample Science
Best for Producers after the crisp, snappy character of 1980s Roland drum machines — the tight hi-hats, punchy bass drum, and minimal decay that defined early electronic, electro, acid, and lo-fi hip hop. Equally useful for anyone building retro-styled beats who wants the authentic hardware sound without hardware cost, and for adding grain and warmth to modern productions via the built-in vinyl and tape layers.

Description

606 Koncept is a sample-based instrument plugin that faithfully recreates the Roland TR-606 Drumatix, an iconic analog drum machine from the early 1980s. Each of the seven drum voices — bass drum, snare, low tom, high tom, open hi-hat, closed hi-hat, and cymbal — has been meticulously sampled from the real hardware and mapped to General MIDI convention.

Beyond the core drum sounds, three FX layer channels blend vinyl crackle, tape hiss, and a sub sine wave into any hit for instant lo-fi texture. Each drum channel also has independent volume, pan, decay, and pitch controls (±2 semitones), with a global summing pitch mixer for shifting the entire kit together.

Additional modulation tools include a multi-waveform LFO, a room reverb, and highpass/lowpass filters for shaping sounds without leaving the plugin. Three voice modes — polyphonic, monophonic, and legato — let you control how notes stack or cut each other, which is useful for snare rolls and tightly-gated hat patterns.

606 Koncept runs as a 64-bit VST/VST3/AUi instrument on both Windows and macOS. At under 10 MB it is one of the most complete and lightweight TR-606 emulations available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 606 Koncept include a step sequencer?

No — unlike the original TR-606 hardware, the plugin does not have a built-in step sequencer. You trigger drum sounds via MIDI from your DAW, which gives you full control over timing, velocity, and pattern length using your piano roll or MIDI clip editor.

What formats does 606 Koncept support, and does it work on Mac?

It supports 64-bit VST2, VST3, and AUi formats, so it works in virtually any modern DAW on both Windows (8.1, 10, 11) and macOS (10.12 and up). The original release was Windows-only but Sample Science added macOS support in a later update.

What are the vinyl, tape, and sub layers for?

These are three FX tone-generator channels that sit alongside the drum hits rather than processing them. The vinyl layer adds record crackle, tape adds hiss, and sub adds a sine-wave low-end thump beneath the kick. Each has its own volume, pan, decay, and release knobs.

How is the pitch control set up?

Each drum channel has its own pitch knob covering ±2 semitones. A global summing pitch mixer also lets you shift the entire kit up or down together, making it easy to tune the full kit to a track or create pitched percussion effects.
