Description

Cassette Toy Xylo by Red Sounds is a sampled toy xylophone instrument that runs the original recordings through cassette tape to deliver a naturally degraded, lo-fi character. The plugin captures the charm of a small children's xylophone with all the imperfections that come from analog tape saturation and pitch wobble.

The sampling approach involved recording each xylophone note directly to cassette tape before converting to digital, preserving the warmth, flutter, and frequency rolloff that cassette media introduces. A dedicated wobble control lets you dial in additional tape pitch variation for anything from subtle drift to exaggerated warble.

Separate gain controls for sustain and hammer samples give you direct access to the two core components of the xylophone sound. The hammer control shapes the initial transient attack, while the sustain gain adjusts the resonant body of each note, letting you shift between a percussive pluck and a longer, ringing tone.

Additional sound-shaping tools include a full ADSR envelope, reverb, and a lowpass filter for further taming the high-frequency content. These controls combine to push the instrument from dry, close-mic toy percussion into washed-out ambient territory.

The plugin is a VST3 instrument for Windows only, installed by copying the Cassette Toy Xylo folder into your system VST3 directory. There are no additional sample libraries or dependencies required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What controls does Cassette Toy Xylo offer for shaping the sound?

The plugin includes an ADSR envelope, reverb, lowpass filter, wobble control for tape pitch variation, and independent gain controls for the sustain and hammer sample layers. These let you adjust everything from the transient attack to the overall tonal warmth.

How was the cassette tape character captured in this plugin?

Red Sounds recorded each xylophone note directly onto cassette tape before converting the recordings to digital samples. This process bakes in the natural tape saturation, pitch flutter, and frequency rolloff rather than simulating these effects digitally after the fact.

Can Cassette Toy Xylo be used in music genres beyond lo-fi?

While it was designed with lo-fi aesthetics in mind, the xylophone tones work well in any context that benefits from imperfect, characterful percussion. Producers have used similar cassette-processed instruments in indie pop, soundtrack work, and experimental electronic music.
