Key Features

  • High-quality stereo frequency shifter that manipulates raw frequency content rather than pitch, producing effects impossible with standard pitch shifters
  • Envelope follower adds dynamic, input-responsive modulation to rhythmic material like drums and percussion
  • LFO with 10 waveforms including 3 randomized shapes for creating unlimited modulation patterns with tempo sync
  • Delay with configurable routing to the direct path or feedback loop, creating increasingly shifted repetitions with each echo
  • Four real-time oscillator windows providing visual feedback of all major modulation parameters during use
  • Flying knobs, preset morphing with adjustable transitions, and MIDI autobind designed for live performance
  • Supports VST, AU, and AAX formats on both macOS (Intel) and Windows in 32-bit and 64-bit

Description

Legacy Hematohm by Ohm Force is a frequency shifter plugin that manipulates frequency content in ways that go far beyond standard ring modulation or pitch shifting. Rather than transposing pitch while preserving harmonic relationships, it shifts every frequency component by a fixed amount in Hertz, deliberately destroying the original harmonic structure to produce otherworldly tonal results.

The plugin pairs its frequency shifting engine with a responsive envelope follower and an LFO offering 10 waveforms including three randomized shapes. This combination creates an enormous range of modulation patterns, from rhythmic pulsing effects that lock to your DAW's tempo to unpredictable evolving textures.

A built-in delay can be routed to either the direct signal path or the feedback path alone. Placing the frequency shifter inside the delay's feedback loop means each repetition drifts further from the original pitch, producing spiraling metallic cascades that are impossible to achieve with conventional delay plugins.

Four oscillator windows display real-time graphical feedback for all major modulation parameters. Flying knobs, preset morphing with adjustable transition times, and MIDI autobind make Hematohm well-suited for live performance and improvised sound design sessions.

Originally a commercial product, Ohm Force released Hematohm as a legacy freeware title in August 2023. It supports VST, AU, and AAX formats on macOS (Intel only, via Rosetta on Apple Silicon) and Windows in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Tips

  • Experiment with the envelope follower to add dynamic changes to your sound.
  • Use the LFO's randomized shapes to create unique modulation patterns.
  • Route the delay to the feedback path for more complex sound textures.
  • Utilize the four oscillator windows to monitor and adjust modulation parameters in real-time.
  • Apply Hematohm to drums and vocals to achieve unconventional effects.
  • Leverage the MIDI autobind feature for seamless integration into your live setup.
  • Explore the built-in presets to understand the plugin's capabilities and inspire new ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between frequency shifting and pitch shifting?

A pitch shifter transposes all frequencies proportionally, preserving harmonic relationships so a chord still sounds like a chord at a different pitch. A frequency shifter like Hematohm adds or subtracts a fixed number of Hertz to every frequency component, which destroys the harmonic series and produces metallic, inharmonic tones that sound distinctly alien.

Does Legacy Hematohm work on Apple Silicon Macs?

Hematohm does not have a native Apple Silicon build. However, it will run on Apple Silicon Macs through Rosetta 2 translation when your DAW is running in Intel compatibility mode. The AU format has been reported to work in hosts running natively under Rosetta.

Can Hematohm sync its LFO to my DAW's tempo?

Yes, Hematohm supports tempo synchronization with compatible DAW hosts. The LFO phase adjusts to the host tempo, allowing you to create rhythmic, musically-timed frequency shifting effects that stay locked to your project's BPM.

Is Ohm Force still providing updates or support for Hematohm?

No. Ohm Force released Hematohm as unsupported legacy freeware in August 2023. The plugin will not receive further updates or bug fixes. It works reliably on current systems via Rosetta on Mac, but future OS changes could break compatibility.
