Description

AdHd Leveling Tool is a tube leveling amplifier plugin heavily inspired by the classic LA-2A, one of the most celebrated optical compressors in recording history. It delivers warm, smooth compression with program-dependent behavior that responds musically to incoming audio, making it particularly effective on vocals.

The plugin features gain, peak reduction, attack, release, and ratio controls alongside a dry/wet knob for dialing in parallel compression. A sidechain high-pass filter helps reduce pumping on bass-heavy material by filtering the detector signal, keeping low frequencies from triggering excessive gain reduction.

The Drive knob, added in version 1.3, lets you control the amount of tube saturation applied to the signal. At softer settings the compression behaves more like a VCA with gentle, transparent leveling, while harder settings push it into FET-style character with more aggressive coloration.

With 4x oversampling and 64-bit internal processing under the hood, Leveling Tool handles both subtle vocal leveling and full bus compression duties. Users consistently praise its ability to add warmth and tame peaks without audible artifacts, though it does introduce a gentle high-frequency roll-off starting around 8 kHz that adds to its analog character.

The plugin runs on both Windows and macOS in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats at 32-bit or 64-bit (AAX is 64-bit only). CPU usage is minimal, making it practical to run multiple instances across a mix session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Leveling Tool introduce any coloration to the signal?

Yes. The plugin adds subtle tube harmonics and warmth, especially when the Drive knob is turned up. There is also a gentle high-frequency roll-off starting around 8 kHz that removes about 1.5-2 dB at the top end, which contributes to its analog character. This makes it excellent for taming harsh vocals but something to be aware of on master bus duties.

What is the sidechain high-pass filter used for?

The sidechain HPF filters the signal that the compressor's detector circuit listens to without affecting the actual audio output. By rolling off low frequencies from the detection path, it prevents bass-heavy content like kick drums and 808s from triggering excessive gain reduction, resulting in more transparent and musical compression.

How does the Drive knob affect the compression character?

The Drive control adjusts the amount of tube saturation added to the signal path. At lower settings, the compressor operates with cleaner, more transparent VCA-style behavior. Pushing the Drive higher introduces FET-style harmonic distortion and more aggressive coloration, which is useful for adding grit and presence to drums, guitars, and bass.

Can Leveling Tool be used as a bus compressor?

Yes. Many users report excellent results using it on drum buses, synth groups, and mix buses. The dry/wet control makes it easy to blend parallel compression for glue without over-squashing transients. Just be mindful of the high-frequency roll-off if using it on the master bus where you need full bandwidth.
