Description

OverDubber 2 by KlangLabs is a stereo delay plugin built specifically for creating morphing, distorted delay tails. It combines a stereo delay engine with a multimode filter, bitcrusher, pitch shifter, and automatic stereo pitch LFO in the feedback loop — an unusual combination that pushes far beyond standard echo effects.

Originally designed for dub-style vocal delays, the plugin excels at turning short audio snippets into evolving, psychedelic soundscapes. The Explode button keeps the feedback loop alive indefinitely, while the Mute control gates exactly which moments of audio enter the delay engine.

Version 2 added several key upgrades over the original, including the pitch shifting module, a redesigned multimode filter, and an emulated reel control that simulates tape speed changes on the delayed signal. The larger GUI makes the workflow more visual and immediate.

The internal limiter prevents runaway feedback from clipping, though pushing the feedback parameter to its highest setting can occasionally cause CPU spikes and clicking artifacts. For best results, automate the Mute and On/Off controls to precisely control when the delay captures and releases audio.

OverDubber 2 is a 32-bit VST plugin for Windows, built with SynthEdit. The download is a compact 7.6 MB ZIP archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes OverDubber 2 different from a standard delay plugin?

OverDubber 2 places a multimode filter, bitcrusher, pitch shifter, and stereo pitch LFO inside the feedback loop rather than just after the delay line. This means each repetition progressively transforms the signal, creating evolving, psychedelic tails instead of clean repeating echoes.

How do the Mute, On/Off, and Explode controls work together?

The On/Off switch activates the delay engine, the Mute control gates which audio enters the delay, and the Explode button locks the feedback loop to sustain indefinitely. Automating all three in your DAW lets you precisely capture a vocal phrase, let it morph through the feedback chain, and then fade it out cleanly.

What is the emulated reel control in OverDubber 2?

The reel control simulates changing tape speed on the delayed signal, similar to physically slowing down or speeding up a tape machine. This warps the pitch of the delay tails up or down, adding an analog tape-echo character to the processed sound.

Does OverDubber 2 cause CPU spikes or stability issues?

The plugin can produce clicking noises and CPU spikes when the feedback parameter is pushed to its highest settings. Keeping feedback slightly below maximum and using the internal limiter helps maintain stable performance. The Panic button can instantly kill runaway feedback if needed.
