Description
DigiTape is a tape saturation plugin from Pulsar Audio that draws on the sound of early 2000s digital tape emulations. Its two processing modes offer different ways to add density, soften transients, or push a signal toward distortion.
Contour emphasizes high frequencies before saturation and filters them afterward, rounding transients while maintaining tonal balance. Five selectable types change the saturation curve and tonal response, while Drive, Brightness, and Mix let you adjust the result.
Grain takes a different approach, splitting the signal into three bands and saturating the lows and mids. The resulting harmonics add texture to the upper range, with Drive and Brightness shaping the balance between those harmonics and the original highs.
Pulsar positions DigiTape for drums, vocals, and mixes, and describes it as low in CPU use. Bedroom Producers Blog highlights its distinctive early digital character and explains how the two modes differ from more detailed tape-machine models.
The plugin runs in 64-bit VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX hosts on supported Windows and macOS systems. To claim a perpetual license, complete Pulsar’s survey and provide an email address; an iLok account is required to use the plugin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do Contour and Grain differ?
Contour emphasizes highs before saturation and filters them afterward to round transients. Grain saturates the low and mid bands and builds high-frequency texture from the resulting harmonics.
How do I get and activate DigiTape?
Complete the four-question survey on Pulsar’s product page to receive a license code by email. Bedroom Producers Blog reports that the form requires marketing email consent, and Pulsar says an iLok account is required.
Which systems and plugin formats are supported?
DigiTape supports Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 10.11 or later, including Apple Silicon. It comes in 64-bit VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats; AU is for macOS.
