Description

Symphonic Ensemble by Synthescience recreates the lush chorus and ensemble circuits found inside classic 1970s string machines like the Arp Solina and Roland RS-series. Rather than using a single modulation stage, the plugin runs three independent chorus stages in parallel, each modulated at a different phase and rate, then blends them with the dry signal to produce the unmistakable shimmering width that defined an era of analog keyboards.

The result is noticeably thicker and more animated than a standard chorus effect. Harsh or static waveforms gain an organic, living quality that sits naturally in a mix without heavy processing, and the effect responds particularly well to synthesized pad and string patches where depth and movement are essential.

Controls are deliberately minimal, making it easy to dial in a convincing vintage string-machine texture with very little tweaking. The plugin is fully automatable and ships with 32 preset slots, several of which are pre-programmed to cover common ensemble voicings out of the box.

While the effect was originally designed for synth tones, it works surprisingly well on guitars and other melodic sources. Experimentation is encouraged, and users have noted its ability to add instant retro character to almost any input signal.

Symphonic Ensemble is a 32-bit VST plugin for Windows and is part of Synthescience's collection of 18 modulation, dynamics, and creative effect plugins released in 2013.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Symphonic Ensemble different from a regular chorus plugin?

Standard chorus effects use one or two modulation stages, while Symphonic Ensemble uses three independent parallel stages running at different phases and rates. This multi-stage design produces a much thicker, more animated sound that replicates the dedicated ensemble circuits found in vintage hardware string machines rather than a typical single-voice chorus.

Which vintage hardware inspired the Symphonic Ensemble?

The plugin is modeled on the chorus and ensemble modules built into classic 1970s string machines such as the Arp Solina and similar analog keyboards. Synthescience designed the effect based on a vintage string machine model they own, capturing the characteristic lush shimmer those instruments are known for.

Does Symphonic Ensemble work on sources other than synthesizers?

Yes. While the effect was originally conceived for synth tones, users report excellent results on electric and acoustic guitars, organ patches, and other melodic material. The three-stage ensemble processing adds width and movement to nearly any harmonic source.

Is Symphonic Ensemble available in 64-bit or on macOS?

No. Symphonic Ensemble is a 32-bit VST plugin for Windows only. To use it in a modern 64-bit DAW on Windows, you would need a 32-to-64-bit bridge like jBridge or the built-in bridging some DAWs provide.
