- Classic VU metering plus ITU-R BS.1770 loudness measurement for accurate level monitoring
- Dry/wet mix control for parallel processing and precise blend of enhanced and original signal
- New in mkIII: two audio transformer circuits, inductor-based LC filter network, and improved THD performance with distortion-free mid compression
Description
ThrillseekerXTC mkIII by Variety of Sound is a psychoacoustic audio exciter built around a parallel analog equalizer circuit. It enhances audio by taking human hearing sensitivity into account, particularly regarding the perception of transients, tonal masking, and loudness.
The plugin operates on three parallel frequency bands with independent saturation stages: a LOW shelf (70–450 Hz), a MID peak (0.8–5 kHz) with built-in opto-electrical compression, and an AIR shelf (3.2–18 kHz). Each band feeds through its own stateful saturator using non-linear, frequency-dependent algorithms with memory.
Two gain-staging flavors ship in the installer. The Black version targets conservative mixing levels around −18 dB RMS, while the Blue version is tuned for hotter signals closer to 0 dBFS.
The mkIII update introduced VST3 support alongside several sonic improvements. The Drive and Mojo controls now feed a dedicated downstream output amplifier stage modeled on transformer-coupled tube circuits, decoupled from the EQ section for more precise tonal shaping.
Mixers and mastering engineers praise the plugin for adding weight, vibe, and analog character without muddying the mix. Its air band is particularly valued for delivering a silky, expensive-sounding top end that avoids the harshness often associated with traditional exciters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Black and Blue versions of ThrillseekerXTC?
The Black version is calibrated for gain-staged mixing at conservative levels around −18 dB RMS, which is ideal if you use VU meters for level management. The Blue version is tuned for hotter signal levels closer to 0 dBFS, making it better suited for modern loudness workflows.
What changed in the mkIII update compared to earlier versions?
The mkIII version adds VST3 support, decouples the Drive/Mojo controls from the EQ into a dedicated output amplifier stage, introduces two new audio transformer circuits and an inductor-based filter network, and delivers improved THD performance with distortion-free mid-range compression and a silkier top end.
Can ThrillseekerXTC be used on individual tracks or only on the master bus?
It works well on both. Many engineers use it across individual tracks like vocals, drums, and guitars to add warmth and presence, then also place an instance on the mix bus for overall cohesion. The mix knob and subtle character make it safe to stack across multiple channels without muddying the mix.
Does the mid band compressor affect the overall dynamics noticeably?
The mid band uses an opto-electrical compression circuit that applies gentle, musical dynamic control. It smooths transients and adds body in the 0.8–5 kHz range without aggressive pumping, contributing to a more polished and cohesive midrange.
