Description

BasicLimiter is Uhhyou’s single-band limiter for controlling peaks in a mix or individual track. Its controls combine a threshold and gate with adjustable envelope timing and stereo linking.

Attack, sustain and release shape how the limiter responds to changing levels. Sustain adds peak hold time, while stereo link lets you move between independent channel processing and shared detection to manage shifts in the stereo image.

The optional true peak mode uses oversampling and filtering to address peaks between samples. The developer cautions that this real-time mode can still overshoot the threshold, so check the output and lower the threshold if necessary.

BasicLimiterAutoMake is a separate extended variant included on the same developer page. It adds automatic makeup gain, sidechain and mid-side options, at a higher CPU cost than the basic version.

The VST 3 download includes Windows, Linux and macOS builds. The developer recommends the dedicated macOS package and notes that its unsigned or unnotarized status requires an installation workaround; the Linux build targets Ubuntu 24.04 and may need a source build on other distributions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can true peak mode exceed the threshold?

Yes. The developer notes that the real-time algorithm can overshoot the threshold, so monitor the output and lower the threshold if needed.

What does the sustain control do?

Sustain adds peak hold time to the limiter envelope. Longer settings can cause more ducking on drums and may behave differently from release on sustained sounds.

How does BasicLimiterAutoMake differ?

It is a separate extended version with automatic makeup gain, sidechain and left-right or mid-side switching. The developer says it uses more than 1.5 times the CPU of BasicLimiter.

Does the macOS version need special installation steps?

The developer recommends the dedicated macOS package and says the plugin is not notarized. Consult the installation instructions on the developer page if macOS blocks it.
