Diffuse
Key Features
- Combines delay, reverse, reverb, freeze, filtering, modulation, tremolo, octave, and shimmer processing in one experimental effect.
- Uses seed-based configurations to generate new internal effect and modulator combinations for fast sound exploration.
- Centers performance on an XY control for moving through a wide range of textures from one hands-on surface.
- Provides up to two seconds of delay time for short echoes, smeared ambience, and longer space-building effects.
- Lets time-based parameters synchronize to the host tempo so evolving effects can stay locked to a session.
- Exposes all parameters to DAW automation and includes contextual tooltips for navigating the experimental controls.
- Runs as VST3 on Windows and as VST3 or AU on macOS in 64-bit hosts.
Description
Diffuse is an experimental multi-effect from Daniel Gergely that combines delay, reverse processing, reverb, freeze, filtering, modulation, tremolo, octave shifts, and shimmer in one plug-in. Rather than presenting a fixed chain of individual effects, it uses seeds to generate different effect and modulation configurations for discovery-led sound design.
The central XY control is the quick-performance surface: moving it can sweep between the combinations created by the current seed without requiring a deep menu workflow. Time-based parameters can follow the host tempo, and the developer lists up to two seconds of delay time, so the results can stay connected to a project's pulse.
Diffuse is most compelling when a part needs to leave its original role and become an atmosphere, transition, unstable echo, or processed texture. Its range includes restrained delay-and-reverb space, but the random configurations and broad effect set also invite more unusual results than a conventional send reverb.
All parameters are automatable and the interface includes built-in help tooltips, which makes repeatable movement practical after finding a useful seed. The current official page lists Windows VST3 plus macOS VST3 and AU support; the developer-controlled release remains available on a name-your-price basis with a $0 option.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of effect is Diffuse?
Diffuse is a creative multi-effect rather than a single-purpose reverb or delay. It combines delay, reverse, reverb, freeze, filtering, modulation, tremolo, octave, and shimmer processes into seed-based configurations.
How do the seeds and XY control work?
Each seed produces a different configuration of Diffuse's built-in effects and modulators. The XY control is the main hands-on way to move through the sound range made by that configuration.
Can Diffuse stay in time with a DAW project?
Yes. Daniel Gergely lists host synchronization for time-based parameters, alongside delay times of up to two seconds. That makes it suitable for rhythmic transitions as well as untimed ambient processing.
Which plug-in formats does Diffuse support?
The current developer page lists VST3 for Windows and VST3 plus Audio Unit for macOS. It specifies a 64-bit VST3- or AU-capable host, Windows 10 or newer, and macOS 10.12 or newer.
