Description

EB-CatNip is a Plugdata-based frequency-shifting delay from Ewan Bristow, built for turning ordinary repeats into unstable pitch movement, metallic echoes, and strange animated effects. It places an SSB-style frequency shifter between delay passes, so each repeat can drift into a new harmonic position instead of simply fading away.

The main workflow is intentionally compact. Frequency controls the shift amount, Delay sets the repeat time, Feedback drives the delay loop, and SSBand blends upward and downward shifting for anything from slight movement to sci-fi-style effects.

There is more shaping available once you move past the front panel. The modulation page adds an LFO with envelope type, amount, speed, and destination controls, while the patch also includes a three-band EQ, wet/dry mix, input and output controls, and a Spectral Gate before the delay chain.

The official Gumroad page still lists EB-CatNip at GBP 0 with a separate optional GBP 5 support tier, and the product metadata marks sales as not limited. Because it is a Plugdata patch rather than a conventional installer, users need Plugdata installed, then run the patch through Plugdata in plugin formats including VST, CLAP, AU, and LV2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does EB-CatNip require Plugdata?

Yes. EB-CatNip is distributed as a Plugdata patch, so Plugdata needs to be installed before the patch can run. Plugdata is what lets the patch operate in plugin contexts such as VST, CLAP, AU, and LV2.

What makes EB-CatNip different from a normal delay?

A normal delay repeats the signal at the same pitch unless extra modulation is added. EB-CatNip places a frequency shifter inside the feedback path, so each pass can bend the tone into more metallic, dissonant, or animated territory.

Is EB-CatNip mainly for subtle mixing or sound design?

It can do subtle modulation, but the strongest use case is creative sound design. The BPB article highlights everything from gentle movement to sci-fi-style effects, and the feature set is built around frequency shifting, feedback, modulation, and spectral gating.

How is EB-CatNip delivered?

The official page is a Gumroad product with a no-cost Free option and an optional support tier. Users complete the Gumroad checkout flow, provide an email address, and then receive access to the download page and Plugdata installation instructions.
