Key Features

  • 12-voice synth engine supports poly, mono, and legato playing for both chordal and lead parts.
  • Dual PolyBLEP oscillators add unison, detune, stereo spread, sub oscillator, noise, FM, hard sync, and analog drift.
  • Morphing wavetable mode scans through 32 mip-mapped frames from simple waveforms into harsher inharmonic tones.
  • Multimode filter includes lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and vowel formant options with drive, keytracking, and a dedicated envelope.
  • Eight-slot modulation matrix routes LFOs, envelopes, velocity, mod wheel, pressure, and per-note random to core synth and effects targets.
  • Genre-focused effects chain combines distortion, bitcrusher, ring modulation, chorus, tremolo picking, delay, and cavern reverb.
  • Blizzard granular layer adds gated or free-running noise texture for drones, pads, and atmospheric patch design.

Description

Galdr is a cross-platform software synthesizer from Sognevo built around black-metal-flavored sound design. It pairs a 12-voice subtractive engine with morphing wavetable synthesis, expressive modulation, and a dark effects section, so it can move from icy pads and harsh leads to drones, distorted basses, and ritualistic textures inside one instrument.

The oscillator section covers PolyBLEP oscillators, unison, detune, stereo spread, sub oscillator, white or pink noise, FM, hard sync, analog drift, and a 32-frame wavetable mode that scans from simple tones into an inharmonic spectrum. A multimode filter adds 12 and 24 dB lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and vowel formant modes with drive, keytracking, and its own envelope.

Galdr is deeper than a simple novelty synth. Its eight-slot modulation matrix, two LFOs, extra envelope, arpeggiator, MPE-friendly pitch bend and pressure support, and Scala microtuning make it useful for controlled performance patches as well as more unstable sound-design experiments.

The built-in effects chain pushes the identity further with distortion, bitcrushing, ring modulation, chorus, tremolo picking, delay, and a cavern-style FDN reverb. Blizzard adds a granular texture layer that can sit behind played notes or run as a continuous drone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of synth is Galdr?

Galdr is a software instrument that combines subtractive synthesis with a morphing wavetable mode. Its design leans toward dark, metallic, and atmospheric sounds rather than general-purpose acoustic emulation.

Does Galdr only make black metal sounds?

No. The interface and factory direction are black-metal themed, but the engine covers pads, leads, basses, drones, arpeggios, and experimental textures. The darker effects and Blizzard layer simply make those sounds easier to push into harsher territory.

How are the downloads delivered?

The Sognevo page links to the project's GitHub releases and dynamically presents platform archives. Each archive contains every plugin format for that platform, so the product page is the stable route while GitHub hosts the current release files.

Does Galdr support expressive controllers or alternate tunings?

Yes. The official feature list includes MPE-friendly per-note pitch bend and pressure, plus Scala .scl microtuning support for alternate tuning workflows.
