Key Features

  • Radar interface places a source by angle and distance, with Fixed mode available for static binaural positioning.
  • Circle, ellipse, spiral, and pendulum paths create repeatable movement instead of simple left-right auto-panning.
  • Free speed plus 1/4-note, 1/2-note, and one-bar timing modes let motion follow either a custom rate or the host tempo.
  • Doppler pitch movement comes from changing propagation delay as the virtual source approaches and recedes.
  • Variable-position HRIR and interaural-time processing combine with near-field behavior for binaural placement.
  • ROOM adds decorrelated early reflections, while WIDTH and RADIUS shape the apparent spread and distance of the wet signal.
  • Phones and Speakers modes support headphone listening or RACE crosstalk cancellation, with IN PHASE for mono-compatible low end.

Description

OVNI ORBIT is a binaural spatial movement effect that turns a mono source into a movable point around the listener. Its radar-style interface can place a sound at a fixed angle, move it through circles, ellipses, spirals, or pendulum paths, and make it pass by with a Doppler shift derived from propagation delay rather than a conventional pitch shifter.

RATE can run freely, lock one lap to 1/4, 1/2, or one bar, or switch to Fixed for static positioning. That makes the plugin equally useful for a rhythmically orbiting percussion part, a slow-moving synth texture, or placing a backing detail away from the center.

The spatial engine uses variable-position HRIR processing, interaural time differences, near-field behavior, and early reflections. WIDTH scales the wet spatial image, while RADIUS and ROOM help a source read as distant and outside the head instead of merely moving between speakers.

For headphone work, ORBIT provides the core binaural path; its Speakers mode adds RACE crosstalk cancellation, and IN PHASE is intended to keep the low end mono-compatible. The manual also notes constant reported latency, with the dry path delayed to match so partial Mix settings remain phase-aligned.

OVNI Audio supplies ORBIT v0.3.0 under AGPLv3 for macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later. The developer's current page explicitly says the code and installers for ORBIT are free forever with no deadline; download starts from the product-specific page after an email submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ORBIT an auto-panner or a spatializer?

ORBIT is a binaural spatializer rather than a conventional left-right auto-panner. It positions a mono point source using HRIR and interaural-time cues, with distance, path, room, and output-mode controls layered on top.

How does ORBIT create its Doppler effect?

The developer says the pitch change comes from a moving propagation delay as the source approaches and recedes. It is therefore tied to the fly-by trajectory rather than being produced by a separate pitch-shifter control.

Can ORBIT stay in one position instead of moving?

Yes. Set RATE to Fixed to park the source at a static angle; the manual identifies this as the option for static placement. Free speed and the musical divisions are for continuous orbiting motion instead.

Does ORBIT work on speakers as well as headphones?

Yes. Phones is the binaural HRTF path, while Speakers adds the developer's RACE crosstalk cancellation for a stereo speaker pair. The developer also provides IN PHASE to make the low end mono-compatible.

How is ORBIT downloaded?

Use the official ORBIT page and choose the macOS or Windows route. OVNI's product page says the download begins after entering an email address, and it handles the current installer and platform selection.
