Key Features

  • 21 unique reverb/delay modes named after celestial objects, each delivering a distinct spatial character from clean delays to near-infinite reverbs
  • WARP control morphs the interaction between internal feedback delay networks, producing textures ranging from subtle chorus to massive reverberant spaces
  • Density parameter adjusts echo thickness from sparse rhythmic repeats to thick, cloud-like washes of sound
  • Built-in modulation with independent rate and depth controls adds organic movement and shimmer-like pitch effects to the delayed signal
  • High and low EQ cut filters shape the tonal character of the reverb tail, from dark and warm to bright and airy
  • Freely resizable interface with rollover tooltips on every control, making sound design intuitive even for complex parameter combinations
  • Extremely low CPU usage allows multiple instances across a session without performance concerns

Description

ValhallaSupermassive from Valhalla DSP is a reverb and delay plugin built around interconnected feedback delay networks that produce everything from lush ambient washes to never-ending, otherworldly soundscapes. Now at version 5.0, the plugin offers 21 unique reverb/delay modes — each named after celestial objects like Gemini, Hydra, Sagittarius, and the newest addition, Sirius — giving producers an extraordinary range of spatial effects from a single interface.

The plugin's signature WARP control changes how its internal delay networks interact, unlocking textures that span from subtle chorusing and flanging to massive, cathedral-sized reverbs with infinite feedback. Combined with adjustable density, modulation rate, modulation depth, and high/low EQ cuts, even simple source material can be transformed into evolving, complex soundscapes.

Designed by Sean Costello, the algorithms behind Supermassive were intentionally too experimental for Valhalla DSP's commercial lineup. The result is a plugin that excels at dramatic, larger-than-life effects rather than transparent room simulation — think swelling feedback trails, shimmering pitch-shifted tails, and reverb clouds that sustain indefinitely.

Users consistently praise the plugin's sound quality alongside its remarkably low CPU usage, making it a reliable workhorse even in dense sessions. It has won the KVR Readers' Choice Award every year since 2021 and holds a perfect 5.0 rating on KVR Audio from hundreds of users.

Supermassive runs on Windows 7 and later (64-bit only) as well as macOS from 10.9 through Tahoe, with native Apple Silicon support for M1 through M5 processors. It ships in VST2.4, VST3, AAX, and AU formats with no copy protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 21 modes in ValhallaSupermassive?

Each mode uses a different configuration of interconnected feedback delay networks, producing distinct spatial and tonal characteristics. For example, Gemini delivers warm stereo delays, Hydra creates dense reverb clouds, and the newest Sirius mode provides clear realistic decay suitable for rooms, halls, and cathedrals. The differences range from subtle to dramatic, so experimenting across modes is the best way to find what fits your track.

What does the WARP knob do?

The WARP knob controls how the plugin's internal delay networks feed into each other. At lower settings the delays remain more separated and rhythmic, while higher settings cause them to blur together into dense, reverb-like textures. It is one of the most powerful controls in the plugin for shaping the overall character of the effect.

Can ValhallaSupermassive be used for subtle, mix-ready reverb?

While Supermassive is best known for massive, dramatic effects, several modes like Sirius and Sagittarius can produce cleaner, more controlled reverbs suitable for mixing. However, for transparent natural room simulation, Valhalla DSP's paid plugins like ValhallaRoom or ValhallaVintageVerb are typically recommended by the developer.

Does ValhallaSupermassive support Apple Silicon natively?

Yes. The plugin runs natively on Apple Silicon including M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5 processors across all supported plugin formats. No Rosetta translation is required.
