Description

SyncSawSynth is a 32-voice polyphonic VST3 synthesizer from Uhhyou built around two PTR sawtooth oscillators, hard sync, and frequency modulation. Its unusual oscillator design is intended to reduce aliasing while giving sound designers a direct route to sharp sync sweeps, unstable toy-like tones, and more conventional subtractive patches.

Two oscillators can use saw or sine waves, with selectable sync modes, phase control, and cross-modulation. An AD envelope, sine LFO, and pink-noise generator can modulate oscillator frequency, so it is easy to move from focused pitched sounds into abrasive, shifting noise textures.

The signal then passes through a feedback-capable filter with low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and notch responses. Filter cutoff and resonance have their own linear ADSR envelope and key follow, while the output stage uses an exponential ADSR envelope.

SyncSawSynth is most compelling when hard-sync movement is the point of the patch: wiry leads, animated bass parts, and deliberately depleted-battery electronic character. Keep an eye on output level when using very fast gain-envelope attacks or the Dirty Filter option, and consider a high-pass filter after it when pushing extreme settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of sounds does SyncSawSynth specialize in?

It is a flexible subtractive synth, but its distinctive strength is hard-sync and frequency-modulation sound design. The developer specifically points to a low-battery toy-like character, while the oscillator and modulation controls can also produce sharper leads, basses, and noise textures.

How do the sync modes affect the sound?

SyncSawSynth offers Off, Ratio, Fixed-Master, and Fixed-Slave modes. The developer recommends Ratio for tonal results; the other modes are more useful when exploring unusual pitch relationships and less stable timbres.

Can SyncSawSynth create filtered movement as well as oscillator effects?

Yes. Its filter supports low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and notch modes, feedback saturation, an ADSR envelope for cutoff and resonance, and key follow. Those controls make it possible to add moving sweeps after the hard-sync oscillator stage.

Are there any gain-staging cautions?

The developer notes that very short gain-envelope attacks can produce a higher-than-usual peak. Dirty Filter can also click at note-on, and some parameter combinations can create a large DC offset, so monitoring output and using a high-pass filter after the plugin is sensible for extreme patches.
