Key Features

  • Automatic frequency masking compensation driven by a sidechain signal
  • Dynamic EQ-style attenuation that targets overlapping frequency ranges instead of ducking the whole track
  • Delta display for seeing how much the plugin is changing the affected spectrum
  • Sidechain Level, Clean Up, Bury/Reveal, and Amount controls for shaping the correction
  • Resizable interface with input, sidechain, and affected-frequency visual feedback
  • Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux from the official LIM plugin collection

Description

TheMasker is a frequency-masking compensation plugin from the Laboratory of Music Informatics at the University of Milan. It listens to a sidechain signal, compares it with the target track, and applies dynamic EQ-style attenuation where the two signals clash.

The main workflow is built for reveal-and-bury mixing tasks: load it on the track that needs to make room, feed the competing source into the sidechain, then adjust how strongly the overlap is reduced. Visual feedback shows the input, sidechain, and delta response so you can see which frequency ranges are being changed.

Compared with a regular sidechain compressor, TheMasker is more focused on frequency-specific separation than whole-signal pumping. That makes it useful for vocal-versus-guitar, kick-versus-bass, synth-versus-lead, and other dense arrangement problems where a broad level duck would be too obvious.

The official LIM collection still lists TheMasker as a downloadable plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with VST, AU, and standalone availability shown on the product card. LIM also labels the software as a beta/student project and warns that the current ZIP may be detected as a Trojan on Windows, probably as a false positive, so the download is left external for human review.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is TheMasker different from normal sidechain compression?

A normal sidechain compressor lowers the level of the whole signal when the sidechain triggers. TheMasker focuses on overlapping frequency ranges, so it can reduce masking while leaving more of the target track intact.

Where should TheMasker go in a mix?

Place it on the track or bus that should move out of the way, then route the source you want to prioritize into its sidechain input. Common examples include bass making room for kick, guitars making room for vocals, or pads making room for a lead.

Why is the download flagged for review?

The official LIM listing warns that the ZIP is currently detected as a Trojan on Windows and says this is probably a false positive because the unzipped files no longer trigger the warning. Because of that warning, this artifact keeps the download external instead of marking it as R2-hosted.

Is TheMasker production-ready?

LIM describes its student-made plugins with a stability disclaimer, and BPB also notes that TheMasker is technically a beta project. Treat it as a useful mixing tool to test carefully before relying on it in critical sessions.
