Key Features

  • Dual detection circuits for independent Attack and Sustain control with adjustable gain in both directions
  • Soft clipping saturation circuit that gently compresses signal peaks similar to analog tape behavior
  • Sidechain signal filtering for frequency-dependent transient detection and processed audio coloring
  • Two processing modes: Type A for classic envelope shaping and Type B for inverse envelope curves
  • Signal blend knob for parallel processing, mixing dry and processed signals without extra routing
  • Built-in VU meter for monitoring saturation amount and output levels in real time
  • Frequency knob for targeted transient boost or cut across specific spectral regions

Description

TS-1 by Audiority is a multimode frequency-dependent transient shaper that manages the attack and sustain of incoming audio signals. Its "Compression by Saturation" approach uses a soft clipping circuit to gently saturate and level out your signal, similar to tape saturation.

Two separate detection circuits handle Attack and Sustain independently, and both can be filtered for improved detection accuracy or to color the processed audio. A sidechain high-pass filter lets you focus the shaping on specific frequency ranges, keeping low-end energy intact while tightening upper transients.

Starting with version 1.1, TS-1 includes two distinct processing modes. Type A retains the original algorithm with conventional envelope shaping, while Type B introduces inverse envelope curves on negative gain values for more creative transient manipulation.

The built-in soft clipping adds warmth and perceived loudness without harsh digital artifacts, making it effective on drum buses where you want punch without sacrificing dynamics. A signal blend control lets you mix processed and dry signals for parallel transient processing directly within the plugin.

Originally released at EUR 49 and now discontinued, this CM edition provides the core transient shaping and saturation engine with attack, sustain, blend, and frequency controls in a straightforward interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Type A and Type B modes in TS-1?

Type A uses the original TS-1 algorithm with conventional attack and sustain envelope shaping. Type B introduces inverse envelope curves when using negative gain values, which reverses how the plugin responds to transients and sustain, opening up more creative processing possibilities.

Can TS-1 be used on sources other than drums?

Yes. While TS-1 excels on drum tracks, the frequency-dependent detection and soft clipping make it effective on bass guitar, vocals, and mix buses. The sidechain filtering lets you isolate which frequencies trigger the transient shaping, so you can target specific elements in complex material.

How does the soft clipping circuit differ from a standard compressor?

Instead of using traditional threshold-based gain reduction, the soft clipping circuit gently saturates signal peaks in a way similar to analog tape. This adds warmth and perceived loudness while naturally taming transients, preserving more of the original dynamics than heavy compression would.

Is TS-1 still available for download since it was discontinued?

The full commercial version was discontinued on May 1, 2022. However, the CM edition distributed through Computer Music magazine remains available as a standalone download with the core transient shaping and saturation features intact.
