Key Features

  • Loads a reference file directly inside the plugin so mix comparisons stay inside the DAW session.
  • A/B Test switch replaces the live input with the loaded reference for immediate source changes.
  • Loop start and end selection keeps the comparison focused on the most useful section of the reference.
  • Reference Volume trims the imported track from -24 dB to 0 dB with smoothing for click-free level changes.
  • Focused listening filter isolates frequency areas such as low end, vocal body, or high-end brightness.
  • Designed for placement near the end of the monitoring chain or mix bus without changing session routing.

Description

AB Reference is a mix-checking utility plugin for comparing a DAW session against a reference track without building a separate routing setup. It loads an audio file inside the plugin, loops the useful section, trims reference level, and switches the output between the live mix and the reference.

The workflow is deliberately narrow: place it near the end of the monitoring chain, match the reference loudness, then flip between sources while the same section loops. That keeps the focus on mix balance, clarity, low-end weight, vocal body, and top-end brightness instead of file management or extra analysis screens.

Its filter section makes it more useful than a plain playback switch. Enable Filter adds a focused listening band after the A/B switch, with Frequency and Width controls for checking one range before returning to the full mix.

The current Mannix Squared release has moved from the older email-gated article flow into the public full bundle. The official site lists macOS AU/VST3, Windows VST3, and Linux x64 VST3 support, while the latest release manifest identifies AB Reference version 2.0.5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AB Reference analyze the mix like a full metering suite?

No. It is a focused reference playback and switching utility rather than a detailed analyzer. The main value is fast A/B listening, reference looping, level trimming, and an optional focused filter for checking specific tonal ranges.

Where should AB Reference sit in a session?

Mannix Squared recommends using it near the end of the monitoring chain or on the mix bus. That position lets you compare the whole mix against the reference without rebuilding DAW routing.

What changed from the original 2024 release flow?

The BPB lead described an email-gated page and separate macOS/Windows links at launch. The current official product page is publicly accessible and points to the full Mannix Squared bundle, which now includes macOS, Windows, and Linux builds.

Is AB Reference a standalone download?

The current official page presents AB Reference as part of the full Mannix Squared plugin bundle. SSA should send users to the exact AB Reference product page, where the developer controls the current bundle download flow.
