RealCassette is a cassette tape effect and standalone processor from Jan Schulten built from measurements of actual tapes. Instead of stacking generic saturation, hiss, and random modulation, each profile is based on a physical cassette and playback chain.
The core plugin focuses on the traits that make worn cassette playback feel alive: frequency color, slow level drift, dropouts, wow, flutter, hiss, and machine noise. A dry/wet blend plus input and output trims keep it practical for subtle track aging, parallel texture, or heavier degraded-media sound design.
The standalone app expands the idea beyond an insert effect. It can load WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG, and MP3 files, scrub through the waveform, play and pause with the spacebar, change speed and pitch together with Vari-speed, and render the processed result to a new WAV file.
